Bug Description

All seven parts of tutorials include Basic, Shapes, Advanced, Tracing, Calligraphy, Elements of Design and Tips and Tricks were translated to Persian (Farsi) Language.
Since there was not any translation to Persian (Farsi) language, I simply translated English GUI to Persian which still would be useful for the audiences.
There was some out-date content in the Tutorial, which I updated (as far as I could) and I noticed about the related version.
hope it be useful.

And in Persian there are some calligraphy styles. it make me think about creating a web site that help users to learn calligraphy in Persian. (but I'm not sure)

Thank you guys.

Hi,

Thanks for these new translations!

I'm afraid that translating directly the SVG files is not the standard procedure. I suggest that you refer to the translating tutorial wiki page (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/DocumentationTranslation#Tutorial_Translation) and use the appropriate PO files instead (they can be edited with a text editor or poedit, available on Mac, Win and Linux). Since you have already done lots of work, it should not take too long to copy-paste to the PO files (but be careful with special characters!)
The advantages of POs are that we can automatically update them when something change in the original file, and that it allows us to generate all the needed SVG and HTML (for the website) versions of the tutorials.
I've created new (but blank...) po files for Farsi here:
http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/doc-docbook/trunk/

The translated SVGs also need a UI translation file (another PO file, dedicated to the UI) so that we can link them in the help menu. I'll create it a bit later.

Changed in inkscape:
assignee: nobody → JazzyNico (jazzynico)
importance: Undecided → Low
milestone: none → 0.48
status: New → In Progress

Could you please leave a comment in Bug #440194 so that we know which part you thing must be updated?
Thanks!

Thank you jazzy, that's my pleasure.

I'll try to create those files also. I hope it be as easy as you mentioned here :)

And about out-dated stuff, I'm talking about the "Tips and Tricks" especially, I don't remember anything elsewhere at the moment:

in "Clipping or Masking a Bitmap", in lines:
"...In Inkscape Preferences (Misc tab), you can set the option of always importing bitmaps as pattern-filled rectangles."
there is not such option nor in 0.46 or 0.47 version (I don't know from which version it's gone).

in "Transparency, gradients, and PostScript export",
"... make sure it's in the “pick visible color without alpha” mode; click on that same object. ..."
As far as I remember there was no any text button in control bar for Dropper in 0.46, but that's not matter now. in 0.47 there's two text trigger buttons ("Pick" and "Assign"). in order to reach the objective, user should release the "Pick" button (disable it). the text between the quotations ("pick visible color without alpha") doesn't seems to be match according to the tooltip.

And there was something wrong in the "Entering Unicode values" which seems to be fixed in this 0.47 version.

Thanks for your po file!

I've tried to use it to automatically create the basic SVG tutorial, but unfortunately our converter is not well optimized for right to left languages... I'm currently working on it, but I still have some difficulties to resolve some critical issues (texts are now aligned correctly, but not titles, and oblique is not rendered as expected). I've also noticed some inverted tags (keycap, firstitem...) in the po file. The text is right to left, but the tags need to be written as if the text were left to right... Don't worry about it, I'll fix it directly.

Thus I suggest that you don't convert the other tutorials until I've fixed the converter.
If I don't manage to fix it before 0.48 is launched, I'll use your hand made SVG files instead.

Do you plan to translate the Inkscape UI too?

AliQ. (ghanavatian-ali) wrote :

You know I guessed there might be some problem cause of right-to-left feature of Persian language, but It seems to be a good idea to improve the converter ;)
In my manual translation I simple set oblique (italic) style of text(s) to regular, because it's an issue which is related to unicode fonts and I don't think it could be resolved easily.
About inverted tags (keycap, firstitem...) you're right. That's why I didn't know how that converter would work, so I used both right-to-left tags and left-to-right tags. I know that sounds crazy! thank you for fixing it, that's nice of you.

I hope this right-to-left issue could be solved before 0.48, Unfortunately I don't know anything about the converter to help you out. I know Java, so if that could be useful I'll be happy to cooperate in resolving process.

Translating UI? hmmmm.. I don't know, I'm afraid because of right-to-left issue all the Inkscape UI would need to be written from scratch! LOL :D
seriously I've been thinking about it, no result so far! at least people whom I know prefer the English UI of applications. do you think it's a good idea?

Hi,

I've committed your handmade SVG files and they will be available in 0.48. I'm still working on the PO and XSLT stuff, but I'm not sure it'll be ready in time.

I've also created a new Farsi UI translation file in order to link the tutorials to the help menu.
This fa.po file can be downloaded here:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/files/head%3A/po/

Except the tutorials links, nothing is translated and the current Farsi UI is in English.
I don't know how it renders with left to right languages (Inkscape already has an Arabic translation, but I don't understand it...). If you have time, test with some easy strings first (menu entries?).

Regards.

Please check the new values (I'm not sure they apply to your language). You can change it directly in the poedit catalog parameters.

Yes:
1. Generate a fa.mo with poedit (with the default parameters, it is done each time you save your po file).
2. Rename it inkscape.mo.
3. Copy it to the LC_MESSAGES folder of your language. On Ubuntu, the path is /usr/share/locale-langpack/fr/LC_MESSAGES, and it's probably very similar on Debian.
4. Launch Inkscape and change the language preferences (File>Inkscape preferences>Interface).
5. Restart Inkscape.

Farsi is now included in the development branch, and thus it will also be included in the final 0.48 version.
Don't worry if it's not 100% done. It's nice you help us add this language, so take your time. Inkscape is really big and has lots of strings (more than 5200!) and nobody expects you to finish tomorrow :).
Try to finish the menus and most visible UI elements first so that the translated UI looks consistent.

Note that Inkscape translators have a dedicated list here: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/inkscape-translator
Don't hesitate to use it if you have any question regarding translations.

Yes. My family, my work and Inkscape eat all my time!
Sometimes my messages are short (particularly commit notifications...), but it doesn't mean I don't want to talk or don't respect you. It's just that I try to help as many people as possible in a short amount of time.

Good luck with your business!

and some more letters, can't be shown with underline. but the shortcut works pretty good.
I simply ignored this issue, but it can be a pain for final user

Yes, of course, it would be great to have all the tutorials as po files. But could you please review the one you created for the basic tutorial first? There may still be some issues with the SVG and HTML templates that generate incorrect output files with a correct po file. If I remember correctly, we didn't manage to make it work as expected last time we tried. Is the Basic HTML file far from a correct result?

about that html, beside those "square characters" paragraphs (as you mentioned it's a bug), there should be a little modification in the css file named "tutorial.css":

direction: rtl;
text-align: right;

these lines should be added to "p" and "h2" styles.
