Bug Description

I am running 2.6.24-19 Linux Ubuntu release 8.04.1 with all available updates as of 7-30-08. Update manager will start normally but when I click on the "Install Updates" button I get the normal response of "Starting Administrator" but no login box appears. From that point on the Update Manager is frozen. This seems to happen only if another program has been started before running the Update Manager. If I reboot and immediately start Update Manager from the menu everything works fine. It seems to hang when starting from the updates are available icon. At this time this is an annoyance.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in update-manager.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu better. Could you please tell me whether this happens only with update-manager, or does it happen with any application that requires executing as root (eg, Software Sources or Synaptic). If this is the case, it might be a bug in gksu instead.

Thanks

I have had no problems running the add/remove software application which is about the only other application I have had occasion to run that requires admin rights. The problem seems to only occur when I click on the updates are available icon. I'm not sure if there is a difference in how this icon starts the update manager or not. I have two machines (Dell laptop and a Dell desktop) that both exibit the same error. I also have a Cloudbook that is running an older version of GOS that has not seen this issue either so it appears to be associated with the new release.

Launching Add/Remove Applications (gnome-app-install) doesn't require you to be root straight away. It only asks for your password when you commit a change, when it calls Synaptic. I'm not sure if you actually tried installing/removing an application with gnome-app-install. If you did, and it worked, then it is probably a bug in update-manager

Thanks

Since encountering the problem with update-manager I have indeed installed and removed applications. Removed a firewall and installed Java. No problems encountered with either of those. I do have considerable programming experience but it's all with Windows. My experience with Linux is limited and I've never written a line of code for it. If you need additional information concerning this issue I can gather it for you and send it to you.

Thanks for this bugreport.

Could you please open a termianl and run "gksu id" and let me know if that works (or hangs) and what that outputs? Could you also please install the latest version of libgksu from hardy-proposed and check if that fixes the issue?

Seems to work fine.

As far as installing libgksu, I don't follow a lot of the Linux news and other than being able to muck around in my system I'm not a Linux heavy. I do have a very heavy Windows background but I've been away from programming for about 6 years now and getting quite rusty. I will gladly install it if you would kindly point me in the right direction. Once I'm on the right path I can easily take it from there.

It seems as if the problem only pops up when I click on the panel icon when it reports that updates are available. If I ignore the icon and start the update-manager directly the problem never occurs. I've got a pretty standard system with no tweaks or development loads. I have installed all available updates.

If there is anything else I can do to help please let me know.

PS - Despite being a prior Windows programmer (mostly database and VB6 applications) I prefer to boot to Linux. Perhaps one of these days I will find the time to learn how to program in this environment.

Thanks!

ddfarren - To install the latest version of libgksu from hardy-proposed, you need to enable the proposed repository. To do this, go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources. On the updates tab, make sure that Proposed Updates is checked. You can then mark libgksu for upgrade in Synaptic.

Please bare in mind that hardy-proposed is a testing repository, so you should not generally upgrade packages from this repository unless you are comfortable with occasional breakage.

Thanks

Some additional information for you: The update-manager generated a notification that updates were available. This happened while I was using Firefox. I opened the update-manager through the menu system and when I clicked on install updates the program locked up and never displayed the admin password dialog window. I rebooted, started Firefox, and opened my email so I could get the instructions to load the development version of libgksu. I had to start the Software Sources application three times before it actually started. I then installed the latest development version of libgksu, rebooted, started Firefox, and clicked on the Update Manager icon in the panel. It started as expected and displayed the password request when told to install updates.

At this time it appears as if the dev version of libgksu seems to have solved the problem. I will monitor the behaviour of the update-manager to see if the problem has been corrected. I will keep you informed.
