My config is a fairly old Medion laptop, Pentium 4, 512 MB.

Hi,
I just wanted to update this thread with the latest info on the openvz kernel. Both Paulo and myself were able to compile from the git and boot the openvz kernel. Unfortunately something is still not working. The cp and mv commands from coreutils are working fine on the host, but in the VE the cp and mv fail when the target file exists with the following error "/bin/cp: skipping file `%%FILENAME%%', as it was replaced while being copied". Unfortunately this leaves the VE in an unusable state since nothing can be installed by apt.
For reference here is the thread on the openvz forum:

Shall we open an other bug on launchpad for this new bug or just keep going with this one?

Same thing here. It's weird that there wasn't much activity in the git repository after the kernel was tagged 2.6.24-16-openvz. But I don't know how the compilation process is automated.
Also, with the kernel I compiled I get kernel messages like:

Hi Stefan,
I'd like to let you and others as well know that there is a new patch available which fixes the cp and mv problem I mentioned earlier. Without that the kernel would be useless even if it booted fine.

it is available here: http://
I'm not sure whether this patch has made it to the openvz git or not, so we may need to wait a bit with the merging.
Anyway while it makes it to the offical hardy kernel here's how to build a custom one if one is in a hurry:
$ git-clone git://kernel.

Please disregard my previous message, I found what I was doing wrong. Just in case somebody runs into the same issue, the problem is that I was installing the new kernel without properly removing the previous one. I had to purge the openvz kernel packages, manually delete the corresponding directory in /lib/modules/, and only then install the kernel I compiled.
Now everything seems to be working properly.
Thanks. I hope the patch makes into the kernel soon.

Which issue? The booting problem? Or the problem with modules that I had? If it is the booting problem, you can either compile the kernel by yourself (just follow Karoly's instructions, it's that simple) or wait until the new binaries are generated and uploaded to the repositories.

Have not come around to testing cp and mv on guests yet, I'm new to openVZ. I have a few Linux VServer guests laying around and as I understand it they should be possible to run with openVZ - but the config is all different... Have to read some.
I get no sound, witch would not mind much on a server, but on my laptop it is a mild annoyance. Wills kernel is named 2.6.24-17 so it should not be any problem with a previous kernel laying around.

I didn't have sound either. Did you try what I said in a previous message? In my case I had to delete all existing openvz modules I had in /lib/modules/ and run depmod -a. Perhaps checking the output of dmesg would tell you more about the problem you have.

What are the next steps?
Is there any way to use OpenVZ with Ubuntu in a productive enviroment - while the bug is fixed in a "offical" ubuntu repository?
I mean, building the kernel from source is no problem, but what happens if there are any
security updates for the Ubuntu kernel or the OpenVZ patch?
Roy Lee (yoryor) wrote : | #45 |
ps1234,
Just use Will's repositories and install the .17-openvz image.
It worked for me, just that it's not official yet. You can always deploy Will's image first while waiting for the official Ubuntu one to be released. Thereafter, just uninstall Will's image and then reinstall the official Ubuntu one.
Easier than compiling the kernel from scratch.
I'm sure someone is looking into it and I'm optimistic an official fixed kernel will be out soon enough.

Please check that vzdev kernel module is loaded and you have sufficient permissions to access the file.
I created /dev/vzctl with "mknode /dev/vzctl c 126 0", but the error remains the same.
I checked if I booted the right kernel:
user@host:~$ uname -a
Linux host 2.6.24-17-openvz #1 SMP Fri Apr 25 04:52:21 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
When I tried "lsmod | grep vz" it returned nothing. Should there be a openvz kernel module loaded?

$ /etc/init.d/vz status
It should say: OpenVZ is running...
However I'm assuming that in your case it did not start for some reason. If that's the case start it.
$ /etc/init.d/vz start
If there's an error while starting post the result here.
When OpenVZ is running the following modules are loaded into the kernel:
vzethdev, vznetdev, vzdquota, vzmon, vzdev
The /dev/vzctl is created by the init script and you don't need to create it manually.

Hi Anthony,
The git now officially contains the 0049 patch:
debian/
So you don't need to download it and drop it in the folder. Run:
ls -al debian/
and make sure that there are no duplicate patches. You should see patches from 0001 to 0050 and only one from each. As the Ubuntu kernel team adds these patches to the ubuntu git the old instructions get outdated.
For example in my previous post:
https:/
I mentioned to add the 0050-0052 patches, but as of today 0050 is already part of the git, so you only need to add 0051-0052
Hope this helps,

Karoly,
Thanks for the help. I had a feeling that might have been an issue. I removed the extra patch and made sure I had no duplicates, but when I try to run it I get almost the exact same error messages from my previous post. Is there something I am missing? Thank you for all the help!

Hi Anthony,
Could you check that the following packages are installed:
sudo apt-get install linux-kernel-devel fakeroot build-essential

Hmm, or maybe cleaning before starting again?
$ fakeroot debian/rules clean

Odd things happening ...
I updated at home to 2.6.24-18-openvz (hardy 64 bit, upgraded bit by bit from hardy alpha) and everything seeme to work fine.
Today I updated my server at work (hardy 64bit, fresh install) and I still got the cp-bug ... I'm trying to investigate some more whats happening ...
Anthony DeChiaro (adechiaro) wrote : | #84 |
Thanks for the help! I don't think I had linux-kernel-devel installed, so I got it to compile and install the package OK. However, I'm having the same problem as the other -openvz binary repository kernels - my NIC does not seem to work. It has an IP and the correct module is loaded, you just can't ping anything. I'm going to try debugging it some to see what the exact differences between the kernels... strange though.

I compiled the kernel from git (thnx Molnar) and it's working.
Roland Sommer (rsommer) wrote : | #86 |
Please forget me previous comment, the cp-problem still exists. I accidentally tried in the wrong shell-window. This mislead me to think it's working, but I was at the host system.

I compiled the kernel from git (2.6.24-19-openvz) and both bugs (cp/mv and the UDP-bug mentioned above) are gone ... hopefully this will make it into the point release ...

Great!!!
So cool to see that all the outstanding patches have been pulled into the official Ubuntu kernel. We are up to 79 now. ;-) I can't wait to recompile and test. Thanks for the great work, hopefully the 2.6.24-19-openvz is going to be a solid version. I'll report my findings.
Thanks again,
Karoly

Has anyone tried the .19-openvz kernel yet?
I'm sorry I can't personally try it as I have production VPS running in the .17 fix by Will Novak.
Karoly Molnar (karoly-molnar) wrote : | #90 |
It works for me on several production servers. The official v19 contains approximately 15 extra patches, quite important ones. So it is really worth the upgrade.
Cheers,
Karoly

I run it for a week now, no problems so far

Thanks Karoly and Harry,
Your prompt responses are much appreciated.
I've put in an urgent maintenance slot and things seem to be running fine as well.
Perhaps any new issues should have their own bug report filed.
This bug should be considered closed since it now boots with an official -openvz kernel.

I don't know what the problem is.
I use hardy (without proposed or backported sources.list entries).

Hi Thomas,
It seems to me that the reason you are unable to boot is some other issue than this bug ticket was originally created for and actually this bug ticket has been "closed", because the bug has been fixed and a new kernel has been released. So I'd advise you to create an another bug with detailed information, hardware, output of a serial redirected kernel boot, etc...
Cheers,
Karoly
