I compiled the kernel from source using Karoly's instructions above (comment on 2008-04-15).
It takes a couple of hours, and installing some additional tools (debhelper, dh-make, build-essential ), but the result is there, it boots now:

metskem@hood:~$ uname -a
Linux hood 2.6.24-17-openvz #1 SMP Fri Apr 25 20:07:50 CEST 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
