Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device ff6e
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
 Memory at f0440000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

Under Ubuntu 8.10 sound works without doing nothing.
Under Ubuntu 9.04 sound doesn't work by default. With alsamixer we can see that chip is Realtek ALC272.

I've found a dirty fix to make sound available again:

You have to obtain kernel source and remove or comment line 17138 and recompile it:

alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch-realtek.c:17138,

    { .id = 0x10ec0272, .name = "ALC272", .patch = patch_alc662 }

Hi Daniel,

I happened to come across the following thread on the alsa-devel mailing list, "realtec ALC272 support":

http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2009-May/016917.html

And it seemed to reference a patch to enable audio:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-hardy-lum.git;a=commitdiff;h=7662834bb9a78d244c6d7ee43358c14c94d249c9

There also seemed to be a series of patches which followed to mute the speakers when the headphones are plugged in:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-hardy-lum.git;a=commitdiff;h=d47775d68efa5d80552839231fcb4f54dc254c08

And then enable the microphone:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-hardy-lum.git;a=commitdiff;h=cc28eee26d33fac60d598fb2269e673ba83570e9

Do you have any opinion on if these look sane and if we should push harder to get these upstream? From the thread it seemed communication dropped off due to no longer having access to the hw.

@Antonio, it would be interesting if you could test at least the first patch and confirm if it at least brings back sound.

However please note that in order for us to propose this for a Stable Release update to Jaunty we'll need to confirm this is first fixed and applied in Karmic before we can backport. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . But we can work that out. I'll post a link to the new Jaunty test kernel once it is finished building. Thanks.

Should be able to disable KMS from the kernel command line via bootloader config

Good point Daniel.

Antonio, care to retry that test kernel I posted but boot with the "nomodeset"? This can be done by pressing the 'Escape' key at the 3 second pause by Grub bootloader. Then press 'e' (edit) on the buggy kernel entry, followed by 'e' again on the kernel line. Then add "nomodeset" (without quotes) and press 'b' to boot.

Thanks Antonio, sounds promising. Can you also test that :

1) The speakers muste when the headphones are plugged in (and sound indeed comes out of the headphones). If not, I'll likely need to have you also test the following patch:

I added to my alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba (model=ALC272 also works)

No luck getting the internal mic to work however with that.

alsamixer gives the option for capture input source to be D-mic or Ext-mic, but these don't seem to work.

strangely enough model=auto seems to give different options for the mic and I can see on the levels that it is sensing sound in the internal mic, but it won't play back audio.

Hi Leann,

thank you very much for your kernel packages. We spend a lot of time compiling to apply patches.

Using linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic_2.6.28-15.51~lp389040oga1_i386.deb over a Jaunty fresh install:

- Sounds works through speakers
- When plug headphones, speakers mute properly and sounds go through headphones.
- I'm not able to record any sound using the internal mic with gnome-sound-recorder.

Using linux-image-2.6.31-6-generic_2.6.31-6.27~lp389040oga1_i386.deb in Karmic we obtain the same behaviour.

I'll try to test sound recording with an external mic.

Hi Guys,

So I've slightly modified the microphone patch to see if it helps. I've uploaded a new Jaunty test kernel to:

http://people.canonical.com/~ogasawara/lp389040/jaunty/

ie http://people.canonical.com/~ogasawara/lp389040/jaunty/linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic_2.6.28-15.50~lp389040oga2_i386.deb

Please uninstall any previous test kernels you have installed prior to installing this latest 2.6.28-15.50~lp389040oga2 test kernel. The reason I ask is because I just realized I typo'd the version in the previous 2.6.28-15.51~lp389040oga1 test kernel (ie it should have been 2.6.28-15.50~lp389040oga1). Failing to remove 2.6.28-15.51~lp389040oga1 could result in you missing the next released kernel update.

Just for additional information, you can always check the version of the kernel you are running by running the following command in a Terminal just to make sure you are testing/running the kernel you intend to:

cat /proc/version_signature

Thanks again and let me know your results.

Antonio, wonderful news that everything is working now! For the weak mic levels. Have you tried adjusting your levels using a combination of alsamixer in the terminal (including capture settings) as well as the gnome volume mic settings? Sometimes I find I needed to set both to get it right. Also, what is your alsa-base.conf model setting as?

Thankyou Leann for your hard work coding for us! Will there be a new patch for karmic?

Thanks for testing and the feedback guys. If you'd be so kind, I'm actually going to build one more test kernel to see if I can slim down that microphone patch at all. I'm in the process of building it now. I'll post a new link when it's ready. Based on you're feedback I'll craft finalized patches/test kernels for both Karmic and Jaunty.

I'm going to do my best to try to get this accepted into both Karmic and Jaunty. However, I first need to submit these patches upstream to get feedback, probably make changes (and ask for more testing), and then hopefully it'll find it's way into Karmic and Jaunty.

Audio out now working on a Toshiba NB205 via speaker. I will continue to test more in the near future to confirm the headphone port audio output swapping and microphone input. I had to change my model to `toshiba` as an earlier user reported. Thank you very much, Leanne for the fix and others for testing.

Please do what you can to ensure this makes it into Karmic.

UNR 9.04 / Jaunty on Toshiba NB205 with latest kernel from Leann

$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.28-15.50~lp389040oga3-generic

With "model=auto", recording on the internal mic works, but playback does not work through internal speaker or headphone jack. I have not tested external microphone. As was mentioned before, setting model to "auto" gives additional/different devices in alsamixer. For example, "d mic" becomes "front mic" and there's a switch for headphones.

With "model=" not specified, or set to "toshiba", playback works through internal speaker and through headphones, and it correctly mutes speaker when headphones are plugged in. But recording through internal mic does not work. I have not tested external microphone.

So I'm able to set "model=auto", record a sound and then delete that line from alsa-base.conf, reboot and play the sound back. Not quite a workaround, but so very close.

Thanks Chris,

So it seems the patches in the previous 2.6.28-15.50~lp389040oga2 test kernel is what are needed. Chris, if you can quickly test 2.6.28-15.50~lp389040oga2 and confirm everything works without having to specify a "model=" line that would be great. ie please confirm:

1) playback through internal speakers are working
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones)
3) recording through the internal mic is working

I can confirm:

1) playback works through internal speakers
2) speakers mute when headphones are plugged in
(and sound is heard through the headphones)
3) I am able to record through the internal microphone

additionally:
4) I am able to record through the external mic / line-in jack
(I hadn't tested this before, so it may have worked with the "oga3" kernel)

This is with NO model set in alsa-base.conf.

If you'd like to try another iteration of kernel I'd be happy to oblige. Thanks so much for your help!

2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): [OK or Not OK]
3) recording through the internal mic: [OK or Not OK]
4) recording through an external mic: [OK or Not OK]

Can you then try and modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to use use "model=toshiba" and let me know the same results for 1-4.

I installed 2.6.31-6.29 on my jaunty install, but I'm back to having the same problem as in Antonio's comment #53 -- it seems that gdm freezes and the whole machine is unresponsive (ie, can't alt-f1 to get text-mode prompt). I tried disabling KMS in grub by adding "nomodeset" to the kernel's boot parameters and I've also created /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf, which contains the single line "options nomodeset" .

Any ideas? Or should I just install karmic and try out this kernel with it?

I tried the opposite approach this morning and ENABLED KMS in jaunty with the 2.6.31-9.29 kernel by following these instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting. I was able to boot and log in successfully, but the sound is not working correctly. It is behaving much like the 2.6.28-15.50~lp389040oga3-generic kernel would if I set "model=auto".

$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.31-9.29-386

1. playback NOT OK
2. headphones NOT OK
3. internal mic OK
4. external mic not tested

I tried:
model=toshiba
model=auto
no model line

Also, it has the additional devices in the mixer, much like "model=auto" in the "oga3" kernel.

Incidentally, startup time seems slightly slower with KMS enabled.

Hi all, I see that you have resolved for Jaunty and have moved on to Karmic. As a mezzo-newbie user, I am wondering if you could post a quick HowTo for installing the patched oga2 Kernel mentioned in comment #94? I downloaded the .deb and installed, but when I looked for it in / I could not find it. So I am not sure how to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to access this patched kernel, nor whether there is some entirely different way I should boot to use this kernel. Perhaps there is a page which explains all this and you could just post a link as a reply to this. Cheers.

Bushnoh, thanks for clarification (comment #121). Based on Chris Starling's comment #95 I installed oga2, and:
1. Playback works through built-in speaker.
2. Playback works through headphones, & built-in speaker mutes when headphones jacked in.
3. Recording through internal mic does NOT work; choppy static recorded thru both Skype test call and Gnome-sound-record. Sound Device is set to HDA Intel (ALSA mixer), all tracks turned on in Preferences, volume up.
Based on Starling's comment #93, I looked in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf for "model=[whatever]", and could not find the word "model" at all. Does that need to be added? Or am I looking in the wrong place?
Furthermore is it OK to keep trying to thrash out Jaunty issues, or are you all moved on to Karmic now?

I using Ubuntu Jaunty on Toshiba nb205 (which have the same sound bug).

Using the kernel from post #117 fixes the sound problem for me (from speakers and headphones), but i didnt test (yet) the microphone (since i dont use it).
In my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, everything is in default (there's no "model=" or something).

I just think that the sound is low (actually, is more like "ambient sound" in the highest volume), but i cant say it's a patch problem because i didnt test the sound in other systems (Ubuntu is my number one) =)

This patch should be made upstream for Karmic.

Thanks for the fix!
