From what I'm reading on the forums, the apt backend for PackageKit is not complete.
Now I will check if this bug report has already been filed upstream...
Thanks for your contribution, Manzur...

I installed packagekit to test things out.

For starters, the file /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt/get-updates.py does not exist! The contents of /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt are:

This might have to do with the fact that hardy includes packagekit 0.1.6 (interpid will include 0.2.4), while the latest version is 0.3.1 (2008-08-27). I will install from source and tell you if the issue is resolved. If it is, we should change the bug description to "upgrade packagekit to 0.3.1", if not I will file the bug upstream...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in packagekit.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. Hi,

Is that the error that you get? If not could you please
provide the exact error message?

Where do you get the error? On your console as you shutdown?
In a dialog box before you quit? In a notification bubble
when after rebooting?

Thanks,

James

Hi,

Sorry, as I am subscribed to the package I only got the
first message when the bug was re-assigned. I see that you
provided more information now.

Are you running Hardy or Intrepid? If it is the latter we will soon
have a new packagekit version available, and it would be great
if you could try that version to see how it works.

Thanks,

James

Ah, a little investigation shows that you must be using an old
version (from packagekit's perspective, it has had several releases
recently). The apt backend has been re-written, so I can't directly
check if these problems are present.

Thanks,

James

I couldn't build 0.3.1 (or even 0.2.4) from source, because (after having to install libpolkit-dbus-dev libpolkit-grant-dev libdbus-1-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev libsqlite3-dev libglib2.0-dev gettext), it wanted polkit 0.8 and hardy has 0.7. This was becoming a bit too much for me. When Intrepid becomes a bit more stable, I will try out Packagekit there...

In the meantime, I would suggest to upgrade the version of packagekit in both intrepid and hardy...

I uploaded recent packagekit packages for Hardy to the following ppa:

https://launchpad.net/~packagekit/+archive

I don't think that it makes any sense to fix the outdated apt backend of the 0.1.x series, since there are no serious users and it is in bad shape.

The modern 0.3.x series of packagekit requires versions of policykit and dbus-glib which are not available in Hardy.

So this bug will never be fixed.

ok, a philosophical question: ubuntu uses the apt packaging system. if the version of packagekit included in hardy has a non-functional apt backend, why is it in the repositories? i would suggest either updating to a more recent version (one that works with apt, but does not require polkit 0.8) or somehow removing it... including is was in my opinion a bad decision...
