I installed packagekit to test things out.

For starters, the file /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt/get-updates.py does not exist! The contents of /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/apt are:

This might have to do with the fact that hardy includes packagekit 0.1.6 (interpid will include 0.2.4), while the latest version is 0.3.1 (2008-08-27). I will install from source and tell you if the issue is resolved. If it is, we should change the bug description to "upgrade packagekit to 0.3.1", if not I will file the bug upstream...
