Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

I am running dapper drake. Thunderbird has two pop accounts and one movemail account.

The pop accounts work fine,

The movemail account performs strangely. I have selected for it to check mail on startup and every 10 mins. It refuses to do either, even a ctrl-shift-t does not goad it into working however if I right click the account directly and select 'get messages for account' it downloads my system mail perfectly :)

I have tried 'apt-get install --reinstall mozilla-thunderbird'

I have wiped my .mozilla-thunderbird directory totally and set the accounts up again. Strangely the movemail account worked briefly as expected when it was the only account in thunderbird.

Since it works when I right click the account directly I am confident it is not a config problem but a problem with thunderbird.

Since I have been missing system mail it is quite a problem :)

Dave

To reproduce:

1. from the command line:
$ echo "test" | mail -s none username

2. Press Control+Shift+T or select the Get All New Messages menu item... mail
does not show up. However, selecting "Get New Messages for movemail" works.

I'm also having this problem and also the movemail account I have isn't checked
at startup or every x minutes even though the options are set - I have 4 other
accounts, ISP-based and they work just fine.

To get the mails from the movemail account I have to select it and "Get Mail" or
select it from the drop-down box on the "Get Mail" button.

Using Gentoo Linux and Thunderbird binary version:

mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-bin-1.0.6-r3

Thunderbird does not run automatically the Junk Mail control.
However, when I run manually the Tools-->Run Junk Mail Controls,

Yes, with the precondition that you have two accounts. A local movemail
account and a remote pop3 account. I have not tested it with other
combinations (movemail only, imap instead of pop3, etc.)

I applied your patch against Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 running under Ubuntu 7.10 but it failed to work. Mail for my movemail account still isn't being checked unless I explicitly get it for the account.

What version of TB did you verify the patch with? Do you (or anyone else, for that matter) mind re-testing the patch against my TB version or any other considered stable?

And as such it works when building TB 3 or SM 2 from trunk, I just checked that it still applies.

Since the release of TB 3 doesn't seem to occur very soon, I'd like to modify the patch such that it applies to TB 2(.0.0.12) as well.

Would you mind publishing a 1.8 branch-compatible patch or giving details on what needs to be done in the 1.8 branch code for your patch to work? I'm willing to dig into the code somewhat although I'm a complete novice to Mozilla/Thunderbird development.

It will star the message, which is one of the other actions on the same filter, but won't forward unless I click on apply filter to folder.

movemail is the only account in Tbird, and i will not check at startup, or on a timed cycle, only with user intervention. :(

Karsten Düsterloh released a patch to fix the issue for Thunderbird 3, see the bug report. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much interest in fixing the stable branch as well.

Applying the patch to TB 2 works fine, but it still won't fix the bug. AFAICS, the only chance of getting any current Thunderbird Ubuntu version(s) to deal with Movemail accounts appropriately is finding someone with sufficient understand of how TB works internally who can port the patch to 2.0.0.x.

Anyone?

And most probably never will. TB3 is already in Alpha land and thus (plus the fact that this is no security fix) the 1.8 branch is not a likely target.

Given that I get some reviews any time "soon"...

This should do it for the 1.8 branch (TB2/SM1.1). It's untested (yet) but as Karsten stated, even if it works it'll probably not be accepted. Since SM 2 is nowhere near completion I regret that decision but anyway I'm thankful that it's at least fixed on the trunk now. Good work!

This is still broken in TB 3.0b4 (linux binary) and when building 3.0b4 from the source (under RHEL5.4). I also MANUALLY applied the patch that was previously mentioned, but it didn't seem to make any difference. (the patch which modifies nsMovemailIncomingServer.{h,cpp} and nsMovemailService.cpp)

Thunderbird doesn't auto-get based on the timed interval or at startup. It only gets the mail from /var/spool/mail/username when the GetMail button is pressed; and then correctly puts it into username/.thunderbird/*.default/Mail/localhost/Inbox But to get more mail later, I have to press GetMail again.

Can you confirm that this is indeed fixed in the 3.0b4 source that was officially released. If not, can you point me to *a* source where it does work.

Thanks for your efforts,

Scott Nelson

The issue you see there is bug 480945, a separate bug. The issue described in this bug has been fixed, as your comment indicates (pressing Get Mail causes mail to be downloaded, i.e., it was fixed).
