Hah, the crash bug is fixed. I backported that patch from SVN and now it seems to work fine. Here's an updated package. It's been a long journey, but we're nearly there.

  * debian/patches/15_document_table_info_creation.patch: Fix crash when
    creating tables. Will be in next 1.8 stable release.
  * debian/patches/20_goocanvasmm_api_fixes.patch: Remove CANVAS_ prefixes
    from some goocanvasmm calls due to API changes. Will be in next 1.8 stable
    release.
  * debian/control: Refreshed dependencies for libglom-dev.
  * debian/control: Updated build-deps to match configure checks.
  * debian/rules: Don't delete the directory containing the templates.

I'm working (with huats and others) on getting all the necessary dependencies into Debian. I heard it's a very nice place for applications such as glom to live. He'll like it there.
