Bug Description

Binary package hint: gcompris

The current Portuguese translation of GCOMPRIS has multiple problems in the Portuguese translation which are too long to be detailed in the bug report. The template needs careful review from translators, correcting for spell and grammar errors.

Is it the problem of bad Portuguese strings, or is this also a problem of mixed Portuguese and English strings?

It is a problem of Portuguese strings (and grammar). They should be improved.

I recommend that the potential reviewer contact upstream project, http://gcompris.net/, namely José Jorge such that there is no duplicate work in Rosetta and upstream.

Hello!
I'm a professional proof-reader and copy-editor, and also a
professional Portuguese teacher, and I would like to review the
gcompris project for Ubuntu. I'm already a member of the Portuguese
Ubuntu Translators Community. What must I do, since this project is
not available in Rosetta?

Kind regards,

Leonor Hungria

I've been testing a bit the gcompris games. It seems that there are a
few strings left to translate, as well as some translations with bad
grammar and misspelled words... Must the gcompris project be assigned
to someone? Or can I start reviewing it and translating what's
left?...

Kind regards,

Leonor Hungria

Frankly, I´m doing it rather slowly. There are huge amounts of
corrections to be made, mostly spelling and grammar. I hope to have
some free time soon, so I can work more on this project.

Is the upstream portuguese translation any better? Have we broken it in rosetta?

Caroline, the quality of the translation is poor in upstream. This is the result of a spellchecker in upstream (277 reported issues, some of them limitations of the spell checker, but far from all):

The best thing to do in my opinion is to file an issue upstream(GNOME's Bugzilla) and work closely with the current upstream translator to get this properly fixed. You could keep this issue open for cross-referencing purposes, but in my opinion, this is an upstream issue and it is not related to Ubuntu.

I'll be more than glad to lend a helping hand getting it moving.

Cheers,

Og

well, it's now 2009 march 8, and http://l10n.gnome.org/POT/gcompris.HEAD/gcompris.HEAD.pt.po still has incredible and terrible portuguese errors like dirije (should be dirige), aua (água), copía (copia), caêm (caem), which should be fixed as soon as possible, since GCompris is targeted to children education (and some people were considering this a shocking situation, and shameful attack to the open-source community) - it appeared also on tv news here in Portugal, asking how such grammar mistakes on an educational software would be acceptable

Maybe would be great idea having GCompris translations available on launchpad.net translation for speeding and accuracing the whole translation process?

Gcompris translation was totally reworked last weekend by the Portuguese GNOME translation team. The new translation is available in GNOME svn [1]. Note that this was a request of gcomris main developer, Bruno Coudoin in gnome-i18n. The reviewed translation was included in the new gcompris version released earlier today [2].

I don't now what will be the Gcompris version to be available in Jaunty so maybe it will be necessary to manually import the translation in order to fix it for jaunty.
