Bug Description

[karmic UNR daily 20090702.1-karmic-netbook-remix-i386.iso]

Boots up but says "Failed to start the X server". Details offered:

  "Warning: Could not generate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe for vesa driver"

Hardware: Dell Mini 10v netbook. lspci shows a "Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics COntroller (rev 03)"

It gives me a console but the line I'm typing on is below the bottom of the screen (I can't see myself type, but can see scrolled-up output).

When I try "startx", it says:

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(EE) intel(0): Output LVDS1 enabled but has no modes
(EE) intel(0): No modes.

followed by a backtrace 8 levels deep.

The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf is an empty file. When I remove that file and try "startx" again, I get the same error,
but in addition it says "(EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module does not exist, 0)" before the LVDS error.

xserver-xorg is version 1:7.4+3ubuntu4

affects: ubuntu → xorg (Ubuntu)

the 0702 image probably was made in the middle of the issues with xorg/gdm which were causing this. can you try a newer image?

Yes, but it'll take a few days. Rsync doesn't work for the daily netbook-remix images, so I have to download the whole thing over again:

$ rsync -zhhvP rsync://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook-remix/daily-live/20090704/karmic-netbook-remix-i386.iso .
@ERROR: Unknown module 'ubuntu-netbook-remix'
rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(1522) [receiver=3.0.5]

OK, I downloaded the 20090704 image and tried it. I got the same result.

This time I grabbed the Xorg.0.log after the failure. It seems to be having a problem with "modes", but we knew that already.

The dmesg kernel log also shows a problem with "modes" in the drm driver; perhaps this is a kernel problem, if xorg is relying too much on the drm driver in this case.

I don't know if it's related to intel driver, but sometimes kms don't start on a mini 10v.
It cause poor performances in overall usage. It appears sometimes afrer a reboot.
It appears to be randomly.
