Bug Description

The other menu entries are named for example :

"Date and time" and not "Set date and time"
"Authorizations" and not "Set authorizations"

This should be consistent but usb-creator .desktop file is not

Well, it shouldn't be in the Administration menu at all. It's not for administering your system, it's a tool for creating installation disks. But anyway you're right, whatever the menu, they're all "object" names and not "task" names.

Here is a debdiff that fixes this issue.

Applying the patch, the .desktop file will use:
 Name=USB Startup Disk Creator
 GenericName=USB Startup Disk Creator
 Comment=Create a USB startup disk using a CD or disc image

IMHO:
 * disk vs disc - the usb mass storage devices are referred as "thumb drives" or "USB drives" in GVFS or ; better use "disc" (not disk, at least this seems the convention in GNOME and HAL) only for removable media like CD/DVD. See gvfs/monitor/hal/hal-utils.c and gvfs/monitor/hal/ghaldrive.c

 * USB - we really need to have this (technical) info in name? See GNOME HIG about this.

 * Creator - note that the button in dialog is "Make", not "Create"

 * the Name entry should be short, really short. Any further info can be placed in Comment

So, maybe, something like (not perfect, just different from current)
 Name/GenericName=Startup Drive Maker
 Comment=Set up USB thumb drives to store and start up a working Ubuntu system and even personal data

Forgot to mention: the provided debdiff also provide French translation... this is unfair... :-)

Declined the backport task since it'd break translations, and is just a cosmetic change really.
But it looks acceptable for the Jaunty development release.

@Bryce Harrington

How could it possibly break translations when this included by default package is not even translatable... (at least my patch provides a translation for the French .desktop entry)

See #285413

You should know what you are doing here on the long run, Bryce Harrington:
Someone tries to help Ubuntu, doesn't just complain but fixes a bug (doesn't matter how cosmetically it is), provides a patch which is working perfectly - if you want you can even cut out the French translation - costs you 1 minute.

Then you/Ubuntu are declining the patch.
I know it is not critical. But I often see this in Ubuntu - this is very frustrating for people who want to help.
Waiting 6 month for a translation update or a string change is not that easy to understand.

Just wanted to state this.

Luca: fwiw, "disc" is used for media which is a flat disc (i.e. CD/DVD). "disk" is used for everything else (even though they often contain flat discs, such as floppy disks and hard disks do). It's certainly true that USB memory sticks/disks are often called "thumb drives", but they should never be called "discs".

Jonathan, thank you for the correction regarding that the package is currently untranslatable; seeing the french translation included in the patch made me assume otherwise.

Chris, I think you may be overreacting here - I did not decline the patch, only the Intrepid task for backporting it to Intrepid which is already released. According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates, SRU's are only allowed for severe regressions, data loss situations, etc. The patch itself is fine, but will need to go into Jaunty.

My apologies if this caused consternation.

Thanks, maybe, yes.
I on the other hand think that these update laws are made for us, and not the other way round.
And sometimes we get their slaves because we follow them too strictly.
But thanks for stating that.
