Is that a new kind of improvement to make easy ready in small displays ?
For me sounds like more a bug !

I'm affected by this as well, but do have a *lame* workaround.

Simply press F11 to make the window go to true "fullscreen" mode. Then, press F11 again. Viola, Firefox is its normal self (aside from the rendering bug I'm running into).

Try the following:
1. Press F11 to switch to the real Full screen
2. Press F11 again to switch to a normal maximized window
3. Switch from maximzed to normal Window
You might get a window that is larger then your screen resolution:
4. Press ALT+SPACE, select Move and move the window so that you can reach the border
5. Resize the window so that it fits on your screen
6. Restart Firefox and hopefully everything works now

I have an alternate solution;

I installed Firefox 3.1 beta 2 [pre] (I imagine any other Firefox version might work). I ran Firefox once under the alternate version, and the new version started in an un-maximized state. I quit the alternate version.

After starting my target version again (3.0 in my case), Firefox starts in my desired un-maximized state.

Possibly, this is an issue with migrating old settings.

This affects me too. I have to make full screen, and then minimize to get a normal window back, which is quite annoying.

As per TKEP

When Firefox opened cannot see minimisation/ close buttons and it appears to overwrite the drop down ability of the panel.
F11 pressed will get it back to its original state but this has to be done every time when opening firefox.

Running on an Advent Netbook with 8.10.
Only has become a recent problem possibly through updates (Last week) dont remember changing any settings.

For me this happens very rarely. Does this happen every time you open a new firefox for you guys? I have seen this behaviour as well for a couple of times though, but pressing F11 twice fixes it.

Just tried uninstalling Compiz since it was mentioned another linked bug. This just seemed to bugger everything up so have reinstalled it again. No change. Still have to go through the F11 temporary fix.

For me it happens all the time I open a new window: Firefox takes the whole screen (window title bar and gnome main bar disappear & and Firefox menu shows really on top of the screen; gnome task bar disappears & Firefox status bar shows in bottom of the screen).

I have "Extra" Visual Effects in "Appearance" configuration.
Using Ubuntu 8.10 in a MacBookPro and in a HP laptop, both Fresh Installs.

Doesn't happen in a desktop pc with dual screen, where visual effects are disabled. And in any case, only happens to Firefox window.

Pressing F11 twice is a solution, but it's really annoying...

If someone needs more information, please tell me.

Another subscriber returned the same observation. Far be it from me to
argue the point
as to whether this is bug #276640 or not....I have no clue and won't
aspire to dweeb status.
Let me just say, however, that my screen never flickers wherever the
mouse is and no little Firefox
homepage inhabits the center of my screen. I simply never had the
maxi,mini close buttons. A very
helpful person by the name of Crisafulli gave me a heads up that works
for me. I thanked him profusely
and I thank you for responding.

In my case, this problem seems to be caused by an adverse interaction between Firefox 3.0.5 and NVIDIA video drivers. If I set my display resolution at 1152x864, the problem occurs as described above. But if I set my display resolution at 1280x1024, the problem disappears. While I can't be positive, I believe that this problem first cropped up after I installed and began experimenting the the CompizConfig 3D drivers.

I would add that this site's statement that this problem has nothing to do with Firefox is cavalier to say the least. I am unable to provoke this problem with any other applications (and I run many).

Thank you for a positive response; one of only two I've received.
The observation makes sense as I also am using Nvidia drivers, and
I believe I also installed the compiz....3D drivers, on the advice of one
of those "Twenty things you should do after installing...." I'm sure you
get the idea. Anyway, this gives me a direction to move in, as tapping f11
is getting old.
I've been using Firefox since version 2 and have always been pleased as to
it's functionality and durability, so other subscribers' advice as to
replacing it w/
Opera or something else doesn't really appeal.
Again, thank you for this input.

Yes, this appears to have done the trick. Upon shut down and reboot the
Firefox screen now presents properly.
Thank you very much for your time and bother. I don't have a lot of time
to search through all the bug reports
and probably wouldn't recognize the proper solution if it bit me so your
assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,

Still happens often enough on latest Intrepid + Firefox as of today.

Firefox: 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1

When firefox returns from minimized, it often takes up the whole window, covering the top and bottom panels. It doesn't look like the regular full screen, but the only way out I know is double F11, when it returns to normal size, as I want it.

Duplicate status is right (the other 2 issues here are fairly trivial to fix ime) but several work-arounds have appeared in other duplicates of 99740 so i thought i'd help people by mentioning them to save them from hunting around.

In addition to the workarounds already mentioned in this thread it might be worth checking your

Edit - Preferences - Content - Enable Javascript - Advanced - Allow javascript to resize!

Untick this box to prevernt javascript from being able to resize your firefox console to something larger than the desktop screen's boundaries!

I think the flicker is a gstreamer issue to do with ati and nVidia cards (for once intel don't seem to suffer lol) this is something to do with multimedia in a webpage, even if its not on the tab you're currently looking at. A clue would be other multimedia apps flickering but even if the flicker is just on firefox it might be worth trying

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and type in

gstreamer-properties

on the Video tab change the "Output" from "Auto" to "...(no Xv)" this usually stops the flickering after restarting firefox but if it doesn't then you may want to reset this to "Auto". The "... (no Xv)" pulls the graphics work away from the gpu on the graphics card and makes the cpu do the work instead, although it doesn't seem to mind the extra work at all.

Finally the issue the size of the page being viewed appearing tooo smal - try Ctrl + or Ctrl and roll the mouse wheel. Once it's at the right size then try re-bookmarking the link and it should appear the right size all the time now ;)

Good luck!
Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

PS Tkep 2008-10-13 Violas are great too, my flatmate attempts to slaughter one occasionally but she's getting better and was even in danger of getting a good tune out of it the other week ;)
