[HP ProBook 6440b] Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

I found this entry in the ubuntuforum, affecting this bug (at least partial other users describe the symptomes I found). But I think it is important to make a difference betweens users system wide freezes and freezes that only affect the mouse and keyboard.

I experience system wide freeze: Compaq Presario r3065us, P4 mobile, ATI 9200.

I use LiveCD, not being too brave to install an unstable OS.

The funny thing is that if I boot the system in the single mode ('init S' kernel option), drop to the root shell and start XOrg by calling startx, there are no hung ups.

If I boot the system in multi mode - it hangs in approx. 1 minute.

So, I'd guess that it's not the XOrg's fault, but the kernel's. I wonder if anyone can try the karmic kernel, and see if it works or not.

Consistent system freezing since installing Lucid. I've been through many of the fixes described in various forum threads and no joy. It happens randomly and results in a blank screen and total system lockup. A hard reboot is the only answer.

I've tested other OS's (Puppy and Fedora) and no such problem. Nothing in logs.

Asus M4A78LT-M. AMD RS780L. AMD Athlon 2 X3 435. integrated ATI 760G (Radeon 3000)

In my testing of this, I found that xorg will show 100% utilization. I can ssh into the system (but not vnc) when in this state. I can issue commands such as /sbin/halt or reboot.

The issue will occur after sometimes one minute and sometimes after several hours.

I was using ext4 as the file system. I've since backed off to Ubuntu 9.1 and have not experienced this behavior.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

According to StuartN (see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1478787) using 2.6.33 mainline kernel solves the problem. However jonolumb still experiences freezes (far less ofthe though).

There is an interesting thing with the recovery/single mode. According to bdcalvert and me, It seems that if booted in single/recovery mode, there are no freezes (or at least the're far far far less frequent).

Still i'm not sure is this is a kernel or xorg issue....

I am still testing the upstream kernel, running until now without any freeze. But that doesn't mean anything, because the freezes appeared randomly. Also with the main kernel I had some days without freezing. I will report the result of upstream testing tomorrow.

Ok, I now had two freezes shortly after an other.

Things changed a little, for now I had two freezes, where only the keyboard and screen was frozen but I could still move the mouse around on the screen but without the possibility to klik anything. But that kind of freeze is also reported in the forums thread I posted above.

btw: I have no blank screen, I have just a frozen screen, showing the desktop image without any change and not reakting on any keyboard input ot mouse klik action. A blank screen may indicate a different problem.

I agree, my bug (586901) is a duplicate of yours - thanks for catching it. However, I would say kai's problem in the above comments is different, as I've never been able to ssh in after a freeze, and I gather you haven't either.

I see the exact same behaviour as you under the upstream kernel.... freezes where I can still move the mouse, but otherwise the same.

Hard for me to see it being graphics related, as I can still experiences freezes from a text console with X shut down (but with the system still under heavy load.)

Do you have VirtualBox installed?

Hmm yes I have VirtualBox installed but not using it at the moment, should I give it a try removing it? I can't imagine that VirtualBox without running affects the system in the way it happens here ...

I believe I see both of these conditions on the Intel dual-core Atom N330 motherboard.

I have a monitor with both DVI and VGA inputs. The board in question uses the VGA input. Fairly frequently, when I switch from DVI use back to VGA use, the screensaver is active. But the system is frozen. Pressing the CAPS LOCK key does not light the caps-lock light on the keyboard. The mouse does not work. At first, I thought USB was dead, but I cannot ssh to the box and a ping after that results in the report the system id down. A front-panel reset is all that revives the system. This is not new with 10.04, but seems very frequent with 10.04 now.

A second observation of a different scenario is that at times I seem to be unable to use the keyboard, nor can I use the mouse "inside an application window", but I can use the mouse to launch new applications. If I select the System Monitor, for example, it will launch, but I cannot select a specific process. However, I beleive that when I used a right-click, things started working again (memory foggy - it was late).

Most, but not all, of my lockups involve Thunderbird email being active, but not all. I also had VirtualBox installed, until I read this thread moments ago. Also, on a probably-unrelated sidenote, I use a ReadyNAS NAS unit. At some point, once of my systems, possibly this one, started waking the ReadyNAS every few minutes. I don't know if the nfs driver is doing something strange on this host, but that was not the normal ReadyNAS behavior on a system that was sitting idle.

I'm experience this bug too. As same as florianr, my screen is freeze. Sometimes my mouse (and keyboard maybe) stil can move, sometimes it doesn't. If mouse (and keyboard) still can move, Magic SysRq+REISUB works. But, if it doesn't move, Magic SysRq+REISUB not work at all.

Fresh install from desktop CD 10.04; Intel E2200 cpu, ECS 945GCT-M 1333 v.3 motherboard, ide cd, SATA HD, Intel GMA950 graphics, trendnet gigabit PCI ethernet card.

Symptoms: Same as other reports. Screen freezes: no mouse or keyboard. Pressing capslock does not turn light on or off. Update manager continues to download. Did 3 hard resets in 20 minutes. No previous problems running 8.10 or Suse SLES 10 SP2.

Deleted Ubuntuone to no avail. Hopefully somebody will come up with something. Might wind up backing off to 9.10.

I removed virtualbox-3.2 just to eliminate outside code from the kernel, and because I saw a higher frequency of freezes with virtualbox running. System still froze with virtualbox removed.

Also tried going back to 2.6.32-21-generic, and still had the freezes. Three freezes so far today, with the system lightly loaded. Tried doing a DVD rip last night, and the system froze within seconds of starting the DVD rip.

Ran memtest for an hour.... no issues. Will try to run it overnight later in the week.

Sugestion: Set importance to HIGH! This bug seems to affect quite a lot users and needs urgent review. Losing data is given risk.

Priority should be at least high. I experienced over a dozen crashes last night, as I tried various kernels. Finally my system wouldn't boot anymore - just a grub> prompt, and no menu. (I think, because the system froze while I was installing an old kernel/headers.) Took me about 3 hours to figure out how to get it working again (complicated by my booting from software RAID, and by the fact that for some reason grub2 was never installed, and there was no grub menu on either boot disk).

Apart from the hours/days of lost time, now I'm quite nervous about losing data as well. I want to help improve the distribution, but I need a stable system.... will probably have to revert to karmic on the weekend.

Tons of crashes still and I agree priority should be high.

If I'm playing music when the crash occurs I sometimes get as much as 5 seconds of stuttering. The same chunk of audio (length perhaps half a second) will play repeatedly several times before black screen of death. On the basis of this the root problem must be to do with disk I/O cache imho..

I've had the same behaviour while playing audio... a few seconds of audio playing over and over again, and no other response from the system (except possibly ping...didn't check that when it happened.)

If it's related to disk I/O... I boot from a RAID-1 EXT4 root file system, assembled from 2 x 1TB SATA II drives. The only other FS is an EXT4 filesystem on a 1.5TB SATA II drive used for MythTV recordings.

Okay, some progress. I was on a screen showing the System Monitor and some processor load widgets when I experienced my most recent "freeze". The System Monitor window went blank, but I could still move the mouse, and I could the processor load widgets kept running.... I could see that both cores had gone solidly to 100%. I clicked on the desktop icon for konsole.... about 5 minutes later, I got a pop up message saying that the application couldn't be started. I let the system continue to run for almost 20 minutes... the mouse and keyboard froze, however the system still responded quickly to external pings, and there was regular flashing of the disk activity light.... which I believe was from an HD-PVR recording to a separate drive that was in progress at the time of the freeze.

So, it's not a "real" freeze... something is stealing 100% CPU time, such that you can't even toggle numlock on the keyboard. The kernel is still alive.... responding to networking pings, and the HD-PVR driver is still taking data from USB and storing it to disk.

So, I started hunting logs from the time of the freeze. The attached kern.log shows what happened during that very busy period. The following message seems to have been the start my systems "flash forward" ;-) .... more info in the log.

Me again. ;-) Checking my old logs further, I found 92 incidents of "BUG: soft lockup" from a variety of processes (kswapd, soffice.bin, mythbackend, firefox-bin, soffice.bin). In each case, the CPU (sometimes CPU#0, sometimes CPU#1... I only have two cores) is stuck for a reported 61s.

Googling "lucid BUG soft lockup 61s" reveals 100's of threads and dozens of related bug reports... not just ubuntu, either. Some suggesting it's KMS related, and that "nomodeset" in the kernel boot options is a possible work around. Will give it a try and report back.

Well...so much for that theory. nomodeset did not stop the lock-ups for me. Did not get a soft lockup message this time, but I may have rebooted before it was written to the log.

May be I did reboots to fast too, I don't have any soft lockup messages in kern.log

It happens on a Compaq Deskpro ENL/P866 here. It's a Pentium III 866Mhz with an Intel 815 chipset and an Nvidia graphic card.

The system freezes randomly and Ctrl-Alt-SysRq-B is the only way to reboot.

It happens:
- with kernel 2.6.32-22
- in GUI

It DOESN'T happen:
- with kernel 2.6.31-21
- in text mode (tty)

Just tested with mainline kernel 2.6.34 #020634 and no freeze happens anymore.
Unfortunately, I'm stuck in 1600x1200 at 60Hz on 17" CRT with this kernel making the PC hardly usable for a long time.

Just a reminder that I was often seeing 100% utilization in top from xorg. Sometimes after a few hours sometimes after only a few minutes. Having Namoroka/Firefox running or not didn't seem to matter...

I was always able to login into the system from another machine through ssh and issue a shutdown command.

I also have this issue, it can range from having nothing open and simply moving the mouse, to doing hours of work and it freezes.

It has happened for me since Jaunty and no one can seem to pinpoint what it is.

It is probably not definitive but I have not had a freeze since I removed VirtualBox OSE from the system four days ago. I have intentionally left Thunderbird running, randomly checking remote email accounts. I'm am encouraged but not yet convinced.

I don't have virtualbox installed, so that's not related to my issues, still getting frequent freezes, not happening with upstream.

Hello,

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel Chipset, 4GB RAM) I get randomly freezes of the whole system. I can't reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the system making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without freeze and sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let me shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I foun that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with the notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi network connection to my router is not interrupted.

I had a freeze during the night, with the last message that was written kern.log:

Examining the log more closely, I've had four freezes in the last 24 hours... in each case, there are between 1 and 4 incidents of "No irq handler for vector (irq -1)" in the log just before the freeze. In one case, the message was followed by the "CPU soft lockup" message just before the freeze.

However, there are a few incidents of "No irq handler for vector (irq -1)" which did not result in a freeze. And, I've had freezes just after the the "CPU soft lockup" message, where the "No irq handler" message didn't appear.

So, while neither "No irq handler" nor the "CPU soft lockup" message may be the smoking gun, there is at least the stench of gunpowder nearby.

This is back on the current lucid kernel 2.6.32-22-generic.

I'm also affected by this very annoying bug.

I run Ubuntu 10.04 (updated from 9.10) with an old Athlon XP 2500 on an Asus a7n8x deluxe mainboard. My graphic device is an ATI Radeon 9200 SE.

However, I think I can reproduce this bug as my system freezes almost anytime I run Thunderbird.

For my system, last night's kernel reintroduced the bug. The kernel before did not have it.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-22-generic freezes.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-21-generic does not.

Your mileage may vary.

With -21 I was able to go five days without a freeze.
With -22, I have five (5) freezes while using the system on one night.

I had 3 freezes yesterday. In each case the last entry in kern.log was:

do_IRQ: 0.189 No irq handler for vector (irq -1)
(Sometimes the number is 0.175, 0.177).

(Interestingly, there have been no instances of the "BUG: CPU soft lockup" messages in the last two days.

I ran a memory test overnight and it was clean.

I also tested kernel 2.6.31-02063112-generic, 2.6.34-020634-generic, 2.6.35-020635rc1-generic today. All of these froze.

In exasperation, I booted this morning with "noapic nolapic acpi=off" on the grub kernel parameters with current 2.6.32-22-generic. This disables all power management (as I understand it), such that my system is running full-out all the time.

The system has been running solid ever since. Even with torture testing it with a DVD rip in Handbrake, Virtualbox, MythTV recording and commercial flagging, an h264 transcode, and Amarok playing.... all running simultaneously. The DVD rip alone would have been enough to lock the system up within a few minutes without "noapic nolapic acpi=off".

This is not desirable work-around, or a long-term solution, but it at least lets me work for the moment, and allows me to continue helping debug rather than reverting back to karmic.

To re-iterated: this system has been working fine for over a year with karmic and jaunty, with power management. This is a regression with Lucid, and the issue is present with upstream kernels as well.

It would be very nice if someone could assign a more appropriate "High Priority" to this issue and we could get some attention from some devs before this bug report becomes a confused with too many un-related freezes.

Guys, i just found a solution on how to end the random freezing problem in Ubuntu 10.04. I have tried disabling the Visual Effects a.k.a. Compiz by going to Preference - Appearance - Visual Effects, then check the None button. Thats how I did with my system and there are no more random freeze. The bad thing is that there are no more visual effects but I can live with the Metacity features in Gnome. My system works faster, now that I turned off Compiz.

I still get freezes with Compiz on or off unfortunately. Cheers for the
heads up though, it might help others - that suggests that there is a
cause of freezing courtesy of compiz - might be a place for another bug
report.

I disabled proprietary nvidia drivers in Ubuntu 10.04 and Visual Efects changed to None. For now, it is working fine. Let us see what happens in the next hours.

Just so we don't get too many unrelated freezes being tracked in this thread... the symptoms characterized by florianr were:
- issue was NOT present prior to 10.04
- intermittent system-wide freezes
- frozen image on screen, showing the desktop image without any change and not taking mouse/keyboard actions
- sometimes MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works, sometimes not.
- system log is still active for some time after the freeze appears to happen
- system logs do not contain any obvious/consistent message that identify the cause of the freeze
- issue is STILL present testing with upstream kernels (except that you may be able to continue moving the mouse or a period of time)
- not a memory issue
- system stays connected via wireless (if using wireless)
- issue appears on very different hardware (intel CPU and. AMD,; intel video and nVidia),
- not related to a specific desktop (gnome and kde) or a specific application (e.g. virtualbox, firefox, etc.)

From my own observations:
- a freeze can be provoked by running processes with high CPU (and possibly disk I/O) such as with handbrake
- I've been able to prompt freezes with no desktop or X server running.... although I don't know if florianr can confirm this on his system. As such, I doubt the problem can be compiz or xorg related (although, note that it may be processor load related, as as such something like compositing could make a system more likely to freeze)
- I can eliminate freezes by booting with kernel parameters "noapic nolapic acpi=off"

florianr, so we can see whether we're still dealing with the same bug or not, could you please verify:
- your system still responds to pings when "frozen" (and you can't ssh in)
- your system doesn't freeze if you boot with kernel parameters "noapic nolapic acpi=off"

Others, if your symptoms are different from those above, you may want to start a new bug report.

I have Lucid installed on three PCs. Here are the devices and status:

1. ThinkPad T41p
ATI FireGL (128 MB); Compiz enabled
Version: Lucid 32 bit upgraded from Karmic via Update Manager
Status: stable

2. ThinkPad T42
ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (32 MB); Compiz enabled
Version: Lucid 32 bit; fresh install
Status: random freezing; always freezing at blank screensaver; freezing usually on Firefox or Chromium; freezes tend to be clustered (suspect possible issue with certain web sites which may be reloaded after hard reboot); this laptop was stable with Karmic and openSUSE 11.2 - no hardware issues are suspected

Version: Lucid 64 bit; fresh install

I have scoured various blogs and forums and tried every suggestion I could find to stabilize the T42, including:
a. Custom xorg.conf
b. radeon.modeset=0 in GRUB (also tried nomodeset)
c. Set screensaver to other than blank screen (the laptop would still freeze at some point after the screensaver kicked in)

Initially, I thought that some changes had made a difference. However, the randomness of this issue can make a one hour freeze-free session seem like an improvement. Soon enough, though, I would find the system locking every two minutes, five minutes, ten minutes, etc.

However, I think I have finally found a solution without downgrading to Karmic: I had seen where some users with Intel graphics cards had experienced success downgrading the kernel to linux-image-rt (2.6.31.10.12). While I certainly don't have a need for a real time kernel, this was the only kernel in the default Ubuntu Lucid repositories that was based on 2.6.31 and not 2.6.32. I didn't want to go with a nightly build or PPA. I wanted to stick with the stock repo, if possible. Sure enough, I've been operating nearly two full days without a lockup. The screensaver kicks in appropriately and comes out of screensaver mode (which the laptop previously had not done). In aggregate, I've had hours of use without any issue whatsoever. Previously, I would have expected anywhere from 4-12 freezes.

This laptop still has all the various changes that I've made, so I can't yet tell whether it is the kernel alone or if it is the downgraded (plus real time) kernel in conjunction with one of the other changes I have made. I will shortly rebuild this laptop with a custom remaster (using Remastersys) with the linux-image-rt kernel as the sole change. I expect this will work without any special change to xorg.conf or GRUB, but will report back if this fails and the freezes return

The suggestion of using 2.6.31-10-rt prompted me to give 2.6.32-22-preempt a try. While I was impressed with how responsive the desktop seemed with a mix of high CPU load tasks going on in the background, it still failed the torture test and locked up.... this time with the return of both the "do_IRQ: 0.177 No irq handler for vector (irq -1)" and "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! [ghb:9719]" just before the freeze.

The system was a little more responsive while it was freezing... I was even able to switch desktops and try other apps.
Firefox, Handbrake and System Monitor locked up right away (grey windows) - I'm guessing they were on CPU 1, the one which experienced the soft lockup. The desktop CPU load widget showed CPU 1 at 100% Other apps. seemed okay briefly
but ultimately everything locked solid within a couple of minutes, although I was able to reboot with SysRq+REISUB.

I did get quite a lot of info in kern.log this time... the fun starts at line 1003.

I'll give 2.6.31-10-rt a try in the next couple of days.

I'm suffering from random freezes that more or less match the above description. What I see in the logs is:

Unfortunately the many hard resets needed to reboot my multiple-linux AMD hardware (all 64 bits) (Ubuntu Lucid,gentoo, gentoo ~amd, Fedora 12, OpenSuse 11.2,Mandriva, Debian) resulted that my bios failed, and a check-up is now ongoing by a hardware specialist,;-))) So no detailed reports are available, only a couple of observations.

1) Linux versions with older kernels (pre 2.6.32) did not freeze like mandriva, OpenSuse, Fedora
2) Gentoo and Ubuntu had regular freeze of keyboard & mouse (both USB) and screen (2.6.32), 2.6.32/33/34 for Gentoo)
3) Observations made by databubble (item #39 of this thread) correspond to my experiences

However:
a) No special activity was required to get a freeze
b) Often freezing happened after some idle time (no human interaction with keyboard or mouse)
c) wireless (atheron ath5 driver) failed too. Pinging Ubuntu machine from my windows machine did not work after freezing
d) REISUB never worked (keyboard always dead) (e.g. caps lock also dead)
e) freezing occurs also when X was not running (!!!) (So no relation with Xorg and/or Nvidia ?)
f) After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10, the freezing did not happen in the early days. Some indication when 2.6.32:22 was installed the problem were appearing, at least a high frequency seen after 2.6.32:22 and only rare before 2.6.32:22. A similar observation is valid (so far I remember) for the early versions of gentoo-2.6.32 kernels.

As Peter mentions, I have had this bug with no X running, so it may well be kernel related, rather than xorg specific. I didn't get the freezes using the ubuntu upstream kernels .34 line, but I can't get ndiswrapper to work with that kernel, so I can't use it for extended periods.

Bug description:
Hello,

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel Chipset, 4GB RAM) I get randomly freezes of the whole system. I can't reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the system making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without freeze and sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let me shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I foun that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with the notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi network connection to my router is not interrupted.

I also upgraded my old thinkpad r40e from ubuntu 9 to 10.04 and the pc hangs with blank screen, no keyboard/mouse, and no drive activity. It hangs randomly but appears more often if I use firefox instead of google chrome. I can however get back the pc if I remove my pcmia linksys wifi. Then reconnect the linksys and pc continues from where it got hung as if nothing had happened. This pc runs fine before the upgrade.

I wonder if many folks are using NFS 3 here.
I do have the error about locks before the freezes. (failed to register lockdv1 RPC)

But I ran a remote ssh all night tailing messages and nothing, including no freeze.

I mentioned in a previous entry (#43), my HP desktop needed a check-up by my "hardware consultant" due to the many hard resets.
Currently, the machine runs on its original OS Windows Vista without any problem and without any replacements needed. Discussing the issue with this consultant and others, we noticed that "a problem with the heat control could explain" the behaviour observed". (so ACPI). Running the program SpeedFan on Vista did not show a problem, however. So Vista is better than Linux for my HP (oops, never thought I would be able to write that down)

It could be a wild speculation, but I am suspicious about the transition from kernel 2.6.31 and 2,6.32 regarding the ACPI code of the kernel. I have the following arguments:

a) booting with acpi=off helps as mentioned a.o. by databubble (see item #39)
b) There is a variety of failures mentioned by different people, (with or without mouse, keyboard, wireless , heavy graphics load, etc etc). The different computers, different hardware configurations could explain why this variety is occurring, but heat problems may explain the failures of peripherals and kernel.
c) Still looking into the changes made, but apparently a lot has been changed with the introduction of 2.6.32 regarding power control and speedup during booting. Regression testing not rigorously enough for all hardware?

For the record my computer is a HP m8000, without ability to control the ACPI on the bios (setting S1 or S3 for instance).

I cannot afford to install Ubuntu Lucid with 2.6.32 at this moment, I will install a Linux (OpenSuse, Mandriva, Ubuntu 9.10) with 2.6.31 or even older kernel.

For those interested - while I was having this issue on 10.04 (before backing down to 9.1) I did disable acpi by booting with acpi=off. That did nothing and the xorg process still took over with 100% after varying amounts of time.

I had also disabled any compiz effects (which I have to do anyway because you can't vnc into the system *witth* compiz) and the screensaver.

Disabling acpi or apic didn't help my case either. Ubuntu 2.6.32 kernel remains unusable for me.

This seems to be the last logged message before freeze for me:

rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="624" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.

After this message, rsh connection is closed and system is frozen.
In the latest case, there were no messages recorded in the previous 45 minutes.

The usual suspects, but now I suspect there is no real message associated with the root cause:

I installed an Intel Ethernet (PCI) adapter, disabled the on-board ethernet adapter, and the problem is gone. My hardware is the Intel D945GCLF2 Motherboard, and I've seen postings as old as 2008 with comments on the low-end NIC causing issues from day-one. I hope you all are as fortunate to get around your situation, as well.

This issue affects me as well. In fact once while writing this post :-/

Sometimes I am able to ssh into my machine to give it a graceful shutdown. Often I have to press the Reset button, which I hate. Even being able to open a ssh session does not necessarily mean that a "shutdown -r now" will work.

I cannot find anything inside my system logs either. Just a couple of zombie processes last time it froze, maybe this helps:

I just installed the 2.6.34 mainline kernel. We will see if it helps. I haven't found anything yet to provoke the failure :-/

Okay just to check is everyone here on 64bit or is this affecting 32bit users too?

I am currently on a brand new just installed 32bit install with a PAE Kernel and so far not a single freeze.

Need to track this one down everyone.

on my new laptop, a HP ProBook 6440b (with Core i5 and a plain Intel Chipset, 4GB RAM) I get randomly freezes of the whole system. I can't reproduce that, what means I don't know a aplication or usage of the system making it freeze. sometimes I have uptimes of a day, without freeze and sometimes it freezes right after booting the system.

I found out, that sometimes the MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works and let me shut down the system, sometimes not. I don't know what makes that difference. In the system log I can't find any unusual entries. But I foun that the system log is still runing, so shuting down the wifi with the notebooks hardware switch for example is logged. Also the Wifi network connection to my router is not interrupted.

Brand new Lenovo T510, 4gb RAM, Intel i5 (4 core) processor running Lucid. It's been freezing from day one. Just added pae to kernel (2.6.32-22-generic-pae) last week (for some reason installer did not see that I had 4gb of mem). Still, no difference, the computer is still freezing. The screensaver was running and I moved the mouse to wake it up and it froze. The good news is that I can SSH to it (usually it is completely hosed). Right TOP shows 99% cpu idle.

I have everything in /var/log/ If other logs would be useful then let me know.

Some other things to note: compiz is disabled, virtual box is disabled. When this current crash happened I was on AC power and I have the power settings set to not sleep, or spin down harddrives or anything, just turn on the screen saver (which is opengl picture show IIRC).

I seem to still have the freeze. This is an Atom2 motherboard. The BIOS suggests using 2GB DDR2 memory with 5-5-5-15 (667MHz) timings, but the board is equipped with a 2GB 6-6-6-18 (800MHz). Because of the "sudden death" of the freeze, I started to wonder about memory. So, I wrote a little program that allocates memory until it fails to allocate memory. Real memory usage topped out at 90% and the remainder was swapped out. The program reported in the neighborhood of 3GB allocated. I did not do extensive read/write verifications and memtest will not run on this system (never has - exits reporting not enough memory to run).

I have turned off visual effects and now no more freezes. When I turn on either Normal or Extra in System > Preferences > Appearance the keyboard and mouse lockup. I can ssh and reboot.
I ran top and system monitor and did not see any process go to 100% as reported by others.

Fresh install of 10.04, seeing lock ups every couple of days, seemingly random. This system has been running 8.04 with no issues. On a couple of occasions while displaying video from firefox, also overnight when screen has been locked. Mouse + keyboard locked, screen showing purple Ubuntu boot screen, Flashing LEDs on keyboard and no response to 'ping'. After pressing 'reset' button on box the system fails to clean reboot and needs a power off/on to get a clean reboot. I have disabled all power management without any change. As above, I turned off visual effects early on but made no difference.
I also have a laptop which has never had this problem. Is there any info I can provide from these systems to assist with this issue.

Can you tell me if your system has an error in the logs for a GPU
lockup? Or another drm error?

Also, does your motherboard use the CPU to manage workload for the GPU?

I think it shouldn't be incomplete, several of us have tested upstream, we know its not there, it wasn't in karmic, so perhaps this can be set at high priority and then some proper in depth looking for the source of this bug can be completed.

I was able to reconfigure my HP desktop from scratch with 4 concurrent OS after visiting my hardware supplier|:
Windows Vista on one disk
and different Linux brands on the other disk with:
1) OpenSuse 11.2 with kernel: 2.3.31 and a Gnome like (Xorg ?)
2) Fedora 13 with kernel : 2.6.33.5 (gnome) (Xorg nouveau)
3) Gentoo with kernel 2.6.32.-r7 (kde) (nvidia)

The HP had no crash or freezing problem using any of the OS so far.

Previously I mentioned I had crashes with Ubuntu lucid (2.6.32:22) with and without nvidia for the GUI and even without a Gui driver like Xorg and/or nvidia. Not able to ping the system after freezing. REISBUD failed too.

I noticed that the problems became more severe after introduction of 2.6.32:22 kernel. The gentoo kernel 2.6.32.7 I am using at this moment is stable so far. So probably not a pure kernel problem

 I stated before in entries of thisbug that perhaps power management and/heating could be the problem looking at the behaviour of my HP refusing to boot immediately after resetting (too hot to pass the bios?!). Of course other programs/utilities installed when 2.6.32:22 was introduced and perhaps using 99.9-100 % of the CPU, could be another explanation of the the random freezes. To judge that I leave it to the team responsible for integration testing of ubuntu

and more than 70 entries on this bug report, it is not clear what the problem is. To set the status to "incomplete" for this bug report, I can understand from a software maintenance point of view. There is no clarity at all what is really the bug. As usual the define the correct and complete bug report is already more than 75 % of its solution.

To define a proper (integrating) testing plan may help too to isolate the bug(s)

Regarding the current release , it is better to define it as a pre-alpha one.

Perhaps I may return to use Ubuntu again when 11.x has been released and is operational for a couple of month.
Ubuntu is not my default OS any more.

All, please note from the earlier posts.... florianr, myself, and others confirmed that the freezing we were seeing could still happen without X and the desktop running, and on very different video hardware. If your bug seems to be graphics related, you should probably report it separately.

I can confirm that I'm still seeing freezes under the latest lucid 2.6.32-23-generic and 2.6.32-23-preempt.

Further testing shows that if I boot with kernel parameters "noapic nolapic" then the freezing does not happen. I'm currently writing this while playing 720p video, ripping a DVD in Handbrake, recording an HD video in mythtv, commercial flagging a program, running virtualbox (busy doing a virus scan) and playing audio in amarok. While the system is pausing occasionally under the CPU/disk/memory load.... no freeze. A torture test that would be sure to freeze in a few seconds if I ran without "noapic nolapic". Further, if I boot with kernel parameter "noacpi" I still have freezes.... it has no effect on it's own. Again, this is a regression from karmic where I could run without "noapic nolapic".

I tried to disable acpi and apic -- no result.

I don't see any suggested solution. All fixes seem to affect different Problems and not exactly the system wide freezes seen on my system.

I don't understan why this thread doesn't get "important". But I am changing to a different distribution for now, I can't use a instable system like this.

But I will follow this thread an I am also willing to test a solution (if there may be any ...)

If you know the CPU, you can see/ask what it might do for the GPU.
I run the Atom and it helps send work to the GPU.

When you boot the next time, could you see if the BIOS reports the memory
configuration? My timings are 6-6-6-18 but 5-5-5-15 is recommended. I am
changing the memory this week when a new stick arrives.

I can confirm this bug as well. Like Tech2010, I never see any hints of what's going on in the log files. The error has occurred while running 2.6.34, I have not yet seen it since moving to 2.6.35.

Switching the root filesystem to writeback mode (instead of the default ordered mode) will work with EXT3 or EXT4. It is not a solution, but it is possibly a method of gathering further data. In my case, I have a system that is functioning (almost) perfectly with kernel 2.6.34 and freezing with kernel 2.6.32-22. The freeze now affects a single process, all the inodes attached to that process and subsequently all processes depending on those inodes - yes, the system does fully freeze after some time, but I have no difficulty accessing logs after recognizing that a process has frozen. seems to me that it was fine with 2.6.22 and after update to 2.6.32, keyboard would start hanging and repeating same letters
then stop working ,sometimes whole system would hang and i would have to do hard reboot

Got similar symptoms (keyboard/mouse/screen freeze, screen keeps showing frozen image) on an AOpen Digital Engine 945FX

Running Lucid w/ latest updates as of 2010/6/18 (kernel 2.6.32-22).

VirtualBox (non-OSE) is the only addition to this freshly installed desktop-i386 distro. VBox was not running at the time of several of the freezes.

Since some folks were talking about wireless - this machine is wired ether only, no wireless hardware present.
Some folks were talking about filesystems: Chose ext3 during the fresh install.
Video is using onboard Intel 945.

One freeze was during playing of a video in vlc - notably sound continued being decoded and played for several minutes after the visual freeze, until I cold booted.

So I made sure sshd was running after that, and so was able to ssh in and look at the system remotely during the next freeze.

Tried the DebuggingXorg gdb attach to Xorg - just got an eternal wait without return to gdb prompt at the attach. Control+C did nothing during this wait.

Also tried firing up x11vnc to see if I could close things down cleanly or keep working after the freeze. Another eternal wait after it tried to attach to the console session.

Found the following interesting messages via dmesg before sudo poweroff (which was able to shut the system down relatively cleanly, even to the point of reviving the graphics system and showing me the Ubuntu name and dots during shutdown). They show i915 and Xorg tasks blocked on mutexes for > 2minutes, with backtrace. Possible smoking gun for this class of freeze (looks xorg/Intel-gfx specific)?

confirmed that its definatly a 2.6.32 problem/bug
used 2.6.22 all night trying to make it freeze
and i mean i ran everything i have installed all at one time and not a problem
so i restarted and logged into 2.6.32 and withing 2 min. keyboard started repeating letters but everything was working fine
firefox .vlc ,etc ... all with no problems as long as i didnt have to type anything
which is way better than it was 2 weeks ago cuz whole system would freeze up and would have to keep doing hard reboot
so for now will use 2.6.22 and win 7 to bad tho i would have stayed with 9.10 if i knew this was going to happen

im not to sure were to look to find any debug logs or any error logs to post here if anyone can direct me as to were they store ill post them for people to use to help figure out this parasite problem

bf79, when you say 2.6.22 you mean 2.6.31-22-generic kernel, don't you?

I downgraded the kernel to 2.6.32-22 since an update to 2.6.34 mainline kernel did not help...

Since I dont login to the console of my server very often, most of the time I use a ssh or vnc session, I cannot confirm that the freeze is caused by gnome and firefox (flash) issues. Sometimes it just freezes while copying files on a ssh session.

Frustrating, since I dont see anything inside the system logs.

I swapped out my 6-6-6-18 memory for a 4-4-4-`1 memory and my freezing seems to ahve gone away. Of note is that my BIOS is supposed to offer 667MHz memory support, but it is not shown as a selection int he BIOS config. I have been running the system around-the-clock with Thunderbird running for 48 hours without a freeze. Also of note is that memtest86+ 4.10 (or the March 2010 verstion) does not run under Grub or Grub2 on this system. I did run memory test as the bootable 4.10 version, and it passed.

Just adding a note that this affects me as well. Importance seems like it should be pretty high.

Random freezes often occurring (minutes) after a default 10.04 install on an Asus 1201N, 32bit, apt-get upgrade'd all including 2.6.31-22, ext4, nvidia ION, Atom 330 dual-core, 2GB system with all on-board components active via bios settings (webcam, wireless, LAN, card-reader, USB controllers, etc) running latest ASUS 3.26 bios, NOT using nvidia proprietary drivers, and networking via the realtek wireless.

System is essentially unusable.

Note: running 'sudo powertop' will freeze it every time.

Seems kernel related (apparently kernel panic; caps-lock LED blinking), and perhaps related to acquiring of hardware stats/ACPI, although using the built-in LAN (wireless off) seemed to help, where on wireless, system froze in minutes; on built-in LAN, system ran fairly stable. Perhaps removal of HAL in 10.04 is not quite baked?

No logs to add; typing this from win7 factory install (dual boot).

Thanks in advance for any resolution on this issue. My former eee 901 with 9.10 was rock solid and would love to continue running 10.04 on my new fancy machine :) Will try the 'noapic nolapic acpi=off' options since that may help.

Before leaving the thread, I wanted to report my resolution in hopes it might help someone who views this in the future.

I am using an Intel D945GCLF2 motherboard, equipped with an Intel N330 Atom dual-core chip. The build included a DDR2 800 2GB chip with 6-6-6-18 timings that "should have worked". When I replaced it with a DDR2 667 with 4-4-4-12 timings, the problem no longer cropped up. After several days without a freeze (an eternity compared to what was happening), I also updated the BIOS to the 2Q2010 278P update.

Although the BIOS still does not let me manually select the 667MHz speed for the memory, in spite of the specification on the motherboard, things seem to be working fine and I hope whatever other problem is hampering the rest of this group of fine folks gets resolved. Happy Summer!

Sometimes REISUB works, sometimes not. Either this bug or all the hard resets have completely
destabilized the system. Trying to pull information using scp off of the system causes frequent network
errors. apt-get upgrade is failing with hash sum mismatches.

I've got 3 machines on 10.4.

First machine randomly reboots itself.

Second machine exhibits the freeze problem - dozens of times a day if I log in with X, not at all if I just ssh
in to read my mail with mutt.

The last machine seems to be stable (but flash no longer works in firefox (all three machines)).

I know these are separate problems and I should file separate bugs, but having followed this bug
and some related ones, I have no faith that the OS provides the means to diagnose these
problems.

This release is clearly not ready, though I suspect that it's a crappy kernel causing most of the problems.

I installed of the kernel 2.6.34 and it did not work for me. Still freezing!!!!!!!!!

My freeze scenario is:

After a restart and logon i can work for 1 to 10 minutes, I'm very lucky when i get to 10 minutes and more.
Everything stop on the screen, no mouse, no keyboard. I can't change keyboard caps lock or num lock lights . I must do a Hard reboot.

I've identified at least one cause in my situation to be the wireless card/driver. I'm running 2.6.32-21-generic-pae with the latest driver for my wireless card (realtek RTL8192). This same driver is built into later kernels. A few days ago I enabled/disabled the wireless interface trying to get onto a network and my machine completely locked up.

I have a very similar issue as Jonathan described with my wireless card - also a RTL8192. Interestingly, lockups only occur on certain wireless networks (e.g. EAP Type: PEAP; Network Authentication: WPAWPA2; Data Encryption: TKIP/AES; Authentication Method/Protocol: MSCHAP-V2; Inner EAP Type: EAP-MSCHAPv2), other connections (e.g. home networks) appear to work better (albeit not completely flawlessly). Both standard 64bit 2.6.32 kernel and lucid 2.6.34-020634-generic are affected. My current workaround is to disable the wireless card by its hardware switch.

running without X, my proxy server (on my DMZ at home) has now been up for 5 days. Running powertop also has no problems. This machine is a desktop and doesn't use wireless.

Out of curiosity - i wonder how a wireless card driver would cause xorg to show 100% utilisation.

Has anybody of you attached a `lshw -short`? I think I'm not the only one suspecting this bug could have multiple causes.

Re Comment #95 from ischoegl - yes, actually the same is true for me. The crash happens at work (WPA/2 Enterprise, PEAP) but not at home (WEP).

One thing people mentioned in this thread (almost 600 posts about system freezes, albeit there seem to be a number of different reasons) is that it should be still possible to ssh into a 'frozen' machine. I haven't tried it yet, though ...

I used:

nohz=off

kernel option and..... no freezes! I usually had a freeze within a minute (I boot lucid from a pen drive - just for testing, since I'm not that brave to install it because of this bug).

So if this option helps you we'll have a nice workaround and a starting point for developers.

Bah....I rather hate this issue....and also, when I tried to use a live CD to revert to 9.10, I would just get a blank screen when it was supposed to be installing/checking the disc/etc....
So now I have just the 10.04, which has dubious stability, and seem to be unable to revert back!

This bug is the most frustrating kind, since it seems to be completely random. Sometimes, it doesn't happen for days, sometimes it happens within a matter of hours, and it doesn't seem to matter what I have open. I tried the nohz=off trick, but who knows if it worked or not? I guess if I go more than a week without a freeze, I will consider it successful.

Other than this bug, 10.04 is pretty damn fantastic!

Actually, this reminds me of how viruses (the biological kind, not the computer kind--although...) act/mutate and affect different people different ways....
Not that I think this is a virus, though.

However, I have found that since my last update about 5 hours ago, it's only crashed once....

For what it's worth: I've got similar random crashed on my laptop (have had it for a while.) From this bug report responses I got the idea to try the -rt kernel (2.6.31-10-rt #153-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT RT Tue Jan 12 11:01:03 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux), and lo and behold, no more crashes. (I suspect this laptop also possibly has crash issues due to video driver issues, but suffice it to say that with the -rt kernel the machine has been rock solid even under intense load for several hours, which usually would've precipitated a crash.)

Do you need anything from me? (logs etc?)

@ W. Prins: How did you get the kernel to download?

@Daniel Phillips: Initially I just installed "linux-image-rt" but you should probably install the package "linux-rt" from Synaptic (or via apt-get or whatever) which will ensure updates etc work correctly.

For reference, I've reported a possibly related bug tonight related to suspend/resume, which repeatable and reliably fails on the latest .32 kernel, and works fine on the .31-rt kernel.

I spoke too soon. Today, I got 2-3 freeze, 10 < seconds.
Only with Lucid Ubuntu (no on Karmic).
2.6.35-4-generic-pae, Catalyst 10.4 by AMD/Canonical repo.

I just posted this on the ubuntuforums also. I have a desktop running on my firewall as a proxy server. I upgraded it from 9.1 to 10.04 and waited to see how it went. So far, so good. I've had it up for fifteen days. No X or wireless running. (By the way, both my laptop - which failed miserably with 10.04 and was backed off to 9.1 - and my desktop are Intel-based systems.)

Moving back to run lucid with the karmic kernel (latest in that release
2.6.31-14-generic) I get no freezes at all, which supports this being
kernel rather than xorg.

Another user has reported that his random server hangs/crashes have been resolved by the latest proposed kernel Stable Release Update for Lucid. This proposed kernel contains a large number of updates to the ext4 file system from upstream.

It would be very valuable if you could test this and see whether it resolves the problem.

I'm not sure which kernel, specifically, you want tested from proposed..... but I tested 2.6.32-24.38 (amd64) and I'm still seeing freezes. (I find ripping a DVD in handbrake is the easiest way to force a freeze in only a few minutes, but I still get freezes randomly without it).

Nothing in kern.log apart from handbrake segfaulting.

2.6.32-24.38 is indeed what I was asking about.

So unfortunately, the ext4 patches didn't solve your problem.

I'm in this same boat, running 10.04, amd64, and am seeing close-to-random system freezes, typically when the system is under heavy IO load. I'm getting nothing in any logs about it, as it seems the freeze is taking the disk IO system with it. I've tried everything suggested with no change yet. Today I'm taking my ext4 down to ext3 using SystemRescueCd/FSArchiver. This should completely rule out ext4 from at least my personal case. I'll update this when either I get another freeze or have had several days of stability.

I'm frozen again this morning. ext4-to-ext3 seems to have had no effect whatsoever.

I had this problem with a new Lucid 10.4 install. However, turning off Hyperthreading in the BIOS seemed to fix the bug.

Could this have something to do with IRQ routing? I noticed on some other thread somebody saying that uninstalling the irqbalance daemon made the freezes go away. An IRQ routing problem might explain the randomness of the freezes, as everybody has different hardware on different IRQ's. If the kernel stops responding to some random interrupt the results would depend entirely on which hardware it belongs to and would seem random to the user.

I myself so far have had my USB mouse freeze a few times. Sometimes ten seconds after logging in, sometimes after many hours. Sometimes the keyboard still worked, and sometimes the entire system was frozen. This is on Lucid 64-bit.

Is there anyone here who has this problem who has only one core (and no hyperthreading)?

I've been running irqbalance --debug in a console for a while now, and I can see it moving interrupts around between cores. Possibly whenever it does this it could sometimes go wrong or cause problems? OK, I'll stop my uninformed speculation now, but maybe this is of some use to someone with deeper knowledge of these matters...

Yes, here it happens with a Pentium III CPU but not with the Pentium 4 HT...

If you think it's a CPU issue, please mind that it's NOT happening on AMD Athlon 64 X2 (2 cores) and AMD Turion 64 (1 core).

@Montblanc, eh, I seem to have missed something, where was it concluded that it doesn't happen on AMD Athlon 64 X2, or AMD Turion 64 processors?

I see multiple reports here using AMD64, and I myself have random complete system freezes on my AMD Athlon 64 dual core.

I already started getting freezes when running "partimage" (after installing from the internet) on the 10.04 LIVE CD.
I hoped the live CD freeze was an isolated incident that a kernel update and proper installation would resolve (it didn't).
Running partimage with the live CD was a sure shot for a freeze.

I have the same problem on an IBM Thinkpad T41p (Pentium M, ATI FireGL T2 (RV350) graphics card), so this should not be an x64, hypertreading or multi-core issue. I am using the free radeon driver, no proprietary drivers.

Symptoms: The screen goes black; mouse pointer remains visible, but not movable; caps-lock light is blinking. When SysRq is on, the machine can be rebooted with Alt+SysRq+b, but other SysRq commands or other keys commands seem to have no effect. After rebooting, the system logs do not contain any unusual entries. The problem occurs randomly and seems not to be correlated to memory load, disk activity or network traffic (internal WLAN is on though).

The same problem occurs with Ubuntu 10.04 and Fedora 13, but never with Ubuntu 9.10 or Fedora 12. Therefore, we should probably concentrate on those components that changed from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 *and* from Fedora 12 to 13.

@catchmeifyoutry It was concluded in my case. I'm running Lucid on both systems and I don't get any freezes. If multiple reports include an AMD processor, I think that means it's not a CPU specific issue. I may think it's a matter of Hyperthreading or motherboard chipsets, but these are just my naive thoughts.

I have a dell optiplex gx 260 desktop box with Pentium 4 chip.
Installed 10.04 - same issue - random black screen freezes.

It is purely random, **but I have a way to reproduce it.**
Run the:
System > Admin > System Tests>
    Check only the Video Tests checkbox and run through the series of tests.
For me this always crashes (6 times out of 6 attempts), but not at the same point each time.

I've configured grub to boot the 2.6.22-21 kernel which seems to exhibit the problem much less (2.6.22-23 is the killer for me)
In fact I'm not sure I've seen it happen on 2.6.22-21 at all.

If I run "lspci -vv" I see the following video card info:

I have this problem too (system completely freezes - not blank screen - hard reset only - usually CAPS lock and SCROLL lock flashing). My system is:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (but proprietry drivers and compiz disabled)
No wifi

Freezes can occur in any circumstances, but seem more common with cpu intense processes (e.g flash, avidemux)

I ALSO have the same problem with Karmic - but only since lucid came out!

My laptop (Intel dual core + ATI) also suffers from this problem - so I am currently using windows (Joy o joy o joy)

On my system, running the video test does *not* trigger the problem.

In the hope to collect some useful information, I installed the linux-crashdump package. When the problem occurs, the system is now restarted (instead of freezing). After rebooting, there is a ~30MB file called linux-image-2.6.32-23-generic.0.crash in /var/crash. The apport tool tells me that a kernel crash has occurred and asks whether I want to send a report. If I try to do this, it sends ~30MB somewhere (presumably the crash file), but then tells me that a server error occurred and that the data could not be sent successfully.

I'd really like to help, but I do not have the time to study how kexec, crashdump, etc. work in detail. Is there an easy way to get at least some information out of these tools? Is there a "Debugging kernel crashes in Ubuntu"-Howto somewhere?

I can apparently trigger the problem by downloading large files over my WLAN connection using Bittorrent.

On my Intel Core 2 Duo T5550, the video test does not crash the system.

Could you try to use acpi_skip_timer_override kernel option as suggested by Hqxriven at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9612800&postcount=731 ? It seems to be working for me for now - 3 hours uptime.

acpi_skip_timer_override definitely works for me - 8.5 hours uptime - no freeze. Does it work for anybody else?

Hi Ignor. acpi_skip_timer_override does not work for me. So far the only thing that stabilizes my system is nolapic, which has the side-effect of disabling my second core.

I had this problem every day. I solved it by using the 34 kernel. However, over the last few weeks it has started happening again. Twice today. I'm on a Thinkpad T60. Hope this is useful info and this this gets fixed!

I just got another freeze today. I've been running with "radeon.modeset=0 noapic nolapic" for several days (a week, maybe) and hadn't had a freeze until now. As others have reported, I can ssh into the system; Xorg is running at 98% CPU.

Ubuntu 10.04 freezes randomly but pretty consistently; from 1 min to couple of hours. I tried three different recommendations, one pretty technical for my standard (maybe too technical, I have no experience with Unix or usage of "terminal") but I followed the instruction carefully - and they all failed. So, I reverted back to Ubuntu 9.10 - to my surprise, 9.10 would freeze also. Ubuntu 9.10 never did that in my old Compaq laptop with AMD Athlon (screen no longer works - hardware problem).

I really like to be able to use 10.04. Are there relatively new system that run 10.04 without freezing?

I seem to be having the same problem..but I can't even log into my desktop. It seems to be freezing up earlier and earlier. The first time happened right after I launched Firefox so I rebooted. Then it froze while I was typing in my password. I rebooted. (The reisub keys weren't responding.) Then it froze before right after the Ubuntu screen appeared. I just installed 10.04 and it seemed to be okay, but the freezing started after I downloaded updates.

I seem to have a queer version of the random freezes case. My desktop freezes (except for being able to open a terminal through the keyboard shortcut) ONLY when I use keyboard shortcuts that I have assigned to control the volume and when rhythmbox is running. It freezes rhythmbox and firefox and many other windows (can't seem to find a pattern as to which here) and when I kill rhythmbox the freeze is gone.

I have a dual monitor setup for a docked Dell latitude D630 which experiences frequent X freezes. 95% of the time my mouse input still works, i cannot type anywhere in X however I can ctrl alt f1 into a console and restart gdm. The other 5% of the time it is a full freeze and requires power off

Most of the time the issue occurs when I am running the VMware View Open Client and I can clicking from View into something else on my desktop. The issue happened more frequently when this program was run in a window (5 times a day average) but now I run the application in fullscreen and it occurs maybe once a week.

It has also happened without View running and without being docked but far less frequent.

Well - as mentioned earlier - I was having problems earlier with random/sporadic "Black Screens".
Based on threads etc. I suspected problems with video drivers and intel chiopset.

Anyhow I had reproducible test case (System > Admin > System Testing > Video tests => Crash)

After trying out a lot of fixes (new kernels yadda yadda) I finally bit the bullet and went back to ubuntu 9.10.

So far stable. I tried the video tests, but the part where it cycles thru different resolution modes -where it usually crashed- is not in 9.10 so nothing definite at this point.

I notice my xserver-xorg-video-intel is version 2:2.9.0-1lubunt2
I might try to install that particular driver on ubuntu 10.04 at some point (when I have time) to see what happens.

In the mean time, I'll see how stable this baby is running on my dell optiplex gx260 Pentium 4.

(Given I ran it successfully in past with win XP/wubi I'm hopeful)

Seems to me like this thread is capturing information about a lot of different bugs and I have to say I'm really disappointed and disillusioned with ubuntu (esp. stability) at this point. Considering going to "rock solid" debian....this baby seems a helluva lot worse for crashing than windows 95 ever was.

BTW: I'm loathe to ever take an update again!!!! I'm relative new to linux - my initial dabblings were very favorable but Ubuntu 10.04 seems to fall over more often than a drunken toddler!

FYI - I've been able to achieve 12 days of uptime thus far. Same duty cycle, same hardware, same software, etc. 10.04 will automatic updates, default settings (beyond specifying the server kernel image.)

Only, 32bit - not 64.

For what it's worth, this still occurs with the 2.6.32-24 kernel.

Igor, when you talk about using acpi_no_skip_timer and nohz=off, is that in addition to "noapic nolapic", or in place of those options?

I've had the exact issues as described by databubble in comment #39.

For me I've found if I turn off my wireless card I no longer get any freezes (uptime so far of 1 day and 17 hours).

My card using the Realtek driver:
Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10)

Dave, in my case noapic nolapic do not work - I experience a freeze
after a few minutes.

Using either nohz=off or acpi_no_skip_timer seems to help. I haven't
experienced any freezes in either case. I'm not sure if these options
solve the problem, since I didn't run exhaustive tests, however after
13 hours of uptime there is no single freeze - no matter if I use
compiz/wireless/wired network or not.

I've had this problem and I've reliably strace'd the offending thread (usually via SSH).

It seems to be locked on the general pattern of an futex with a NULL timeout:
futex( ... , FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, NULL , ... ,

Backtracing the process shows from gdb:
0: __kernel_vsyscall ()
1: ?? () in libc6.so.6
Backtrace stopped: Corrupt stack.

I've been able to stroke the bug by compiling Enlightenment (DR17) with the Eweather module, setting its provider to "google", clicking "apply" and then "close". This will lock the system fairly reliably.

It seems that if init gets this futex call down the line, it will /stall/ the system.

I suspected it was bad RAM, so I ran Memtest86 and it came up with bad RAM at first, so I swapped out and I'm now running on 256MB of RAM (max on this box is 385MB) and the bug still persists, so RAM corruption is not something thats happening on hardware.

I will see if installing the 2.6.32.11 kernel helps -- Currently I'm on a 2.6.32-15 compiled for SMP and Preemptive and optimized for Coppermine chips (Pentium 3 M here)

Further to my comment #124, I can report that after disabling irqbalance (about three weeks ago) I have not had random freezes any more. It definitely seems to be a factor on my system (quad core Intel Core2, 4 GB RAM, 2 NVidia Geforce 8800 GTX's).

Perhaps others could try whether this makes a difference?

I cannot back that up.

I've tried it on a Coppermine box, and it still causes the random crash syndrome.

This has something to do with a kernel-level patch, it seems. Anyone tried running a way upstream (2.6.35) kernel?

I have a similar problem. Ramdom freeze, which I cannot reproduce. Sometime I get the system up for 36 hrs uninterrupted , sometimes it happens right after booting.

Regarding what florinar wrote on comment#2, I am also experiencing the ramdom keyboard freeze. Could they be related?

After 4 years of Ubuntu and 3 months of random freezing I've migrated to PCLinuxOS.

It is easy to install, works flawlessly, and is based on later packages than Ubuntu.

It appears that Ubuntu devs do not give a c**p about a critical bug in their distribution. In that case, and with regret, the only way to gain stability is to look elsewhere.

That's the beauty with GNU/Linux distros, you have the power to choose my
friend. As for me I'm still satisfied with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Maybe when
10.04.1 will be released I hope that most of the major bugs are already
polished.

Thanks for the info, I think I might give that PCLinuxOS a shot also based
on your recommendation....looks fairly polished based on screenshots.
I tried going back to ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) which was more bearable and
although my "Black Screen" freezes have gone away, I still get an occasional
freeze.
(It's a lot less frequent than 10.04 though)

Well I bit the bullet and greetings from PCLinuxOS!
Was slightly tricky for me to install.....cause I had a blackscreen of death
while installing. (does not bode well)
Successfully installed in VESA mode, and then found it tricky to set the
correct screen resolution...as I had 640 resolution and couldn't see much
when I started up...but got there in the end.

Cannot say I found it quite as easy to find my way around as I did with
Ubuntu, but overall was relatively easy to setup and it appears to be
working well.

I'll post on stability after I've been using it for a bit...

I've been able to prevent this issue from happening, by disabling Pulseaudio (as per the excellent guide at http://www.jeffsplace.net/node/12 ).

My system (Intel D945GCLF2, Atom 330, running Lucid w/ 2.6.32-24-generic) has had no problems at all except when I'd recently been running some audio or video-with-audio; then I'd randomly fall into a situation where the screen and mouse would freeze / lock up (but I could still ssh in to it and restart it etc.) .

Please keep this bug report pertinent to the bug itself. This is not a forum.

I had been seeing this problem on a new ThinkPad W510 running 10.04.

The symptom I was seeing was that the screen would lock up at random times over the course of the day, sometimes after several hours, other times after just a few minutes. I saw lockups after leaving the machine running while I was away from it, but more frequently while actively using the machine. Typically, lockups would happen when I did something actively, such as clicking on a link in Firefox or hitting the return key while in gnome-terminal. In most cases, the cursor arrow could be moved about the screen, but the system would not respond to any input from keyboard or mouse.

After reading this thread, I tried to ssh into my machine while it was locked up. I never found a case when this failed to work. In every case, top showed Xorg running near 100% CPU utilization. I tried to kill Xorg by sending it a signal, but a new Xorg process (with a new PID) would be created, executing at 100% CPU utilization, and still unresponsive to keyboard and mouse.

A coworker with a similar setup to mine said he wasn't seeing any problems like this but that he had had similar problems when he first installed Ubuntu 10.04. After comparing notes, it came to light that he had switched from the free graphics driver that Ubuntu installs by default to the proprietary non-free NVidea driver.

I switched to the non-free driver last week and have not seen the problem even once since switching.

I am able to run pulse audio, and I'm even able to turn on desktop effects that were sure to kill my old T40.

Very interesting, Senor Miller. I assume you're talking about fglrx, yes? Did you do anything more than install that driver, such as removing any of the old ones? Any post-installation configuration to do?

Ooooops, you said nVidia, so ignore the fglrx bit. But the other questions still stand.

Some things I've tried (unsuccessfully) to get rid of the freezes:

- running kde instead of gnome
- running mainline kernel .35rc1
- running bare bones icewm / blackbox sessions

in my case (msi k8t neo II mobo, amd 4400+, nvidia 6200 agp, nvidia 256.xx drivers installed manually), the problems usually start with the caps lock key going wild (all of a sudden, the keyboard (ps2) will create upper case only), then after a while the system locks up completely.

Only today, I had another interesting freeze with the "h" key autorepeating, hard reset required.

I can confirm the same issue here after upgrade from 9.04 (x86_64, gnome, 100% CPU utilization, I've remove all the eye-candy effects)

I usually can kill -9 ssh'ing from another machine, and that, at least takes me to the login screen.

One really interesting thing I noticed today was that after removing openjdk and having sun-jdk (due to another issue) as my default seems to really really reduce the CPU usage.

Are you guys using any open-jdk java software the moment the freeze happen?

Mauricio, good luck with Fedora, however I'm afraid you could
encounter similar problems. It seems that there are serious issues
with newer kernels or/and XOrg (perhaps a combination of them). So as
long you'd stick with fairly old kernel you should be safe (i.e.
2.6.31) anything newer tends to be unstable (some report that 2.6.35
is ok, some that the issue is just less frequent).

You might also try to add kernel options which are reported to help in
some cases, try in turn:
- noacpi noapm
- nohz=off
- acpi_skip_timer_override

For me the latter two work fine.

Recently several people mentioned to stop using Ubuntu 10.04 and start using other distributions. I mentioned in # 47 and # 71 of this thread that I plan to do the same. I have now 7 distributions on two machines.

HP desktop , AMD 5600+ with : Fedora 13, OpenSuse 11.2, Gentoo (and Windows Vista on another disk)
Fedora 13 and Gentoo both fail occasionally caused by freezing of keyboard and mouse (once a week at most ) OpenSuse 11.2 seems very stable (seen only once).Note I can live with the failure frequencies. I choose for Fedora and OpenSuse 11.2 as my default system for my work.

HP laptop (8 years old with one Intel processor) : OpenSuse 11.3, PCLinuxOS (pretty neat BTW), Mandriva 2010,1 and Debian
I have limited statistics on keyboard failure, but it is rare. I did not notice any failure on Debian yet (running a 2.6.26 kernel !?).

Note I am using a mix of nvidia (Gentoo only) and standard Xorg drivers for the graphics dependent on distribution

Of course this does not prove anything, but failure rate on other distributions than Ubuntu are rare from my perspective.

Although I am convinced the basic bug is an issue around the kernel 2.6.32 and later (I see it on all distributions apart from Debian, & Ubuntu failed also without graphics-Xorg), there must be a variable in the Ubuntu distribution on top of the kernel and Xorg which makes Ubuntu unworkable for me on the AMD machine due to the failure rate

Note, I tried to install Ubuntu on the laptop using a LiveCD disc (nothing wrong with the CD, checked and rechecked). That failed too, it failed during booting of LiveCD (old hardware?), and yes indeed keyboard hangs too (including REISBUD interupts) ;-(

Thanks Igor and Peter, those are indeed very surprising news, I was just few seconds to reboot and start the fedora install.I guess I was very hot headed yesterday, (it's not fun when you have to kill your working session many times a day).

I haven't tried the kernel options you mention Igor, I'll give them a try right now. Then I'll check on an old kernel.

Everybody seems to compliment PCLinuxOS, I might install it side by side.

One important thing to notice, I'm in a multi screen environment, and seems to me that this bug is more prone to happen when I click on an application let's say screen one, and while that application opens (whatever I clicked it) if I move my mouse very hard to another screen trying to reach another application it crashes. I'll try to replicate, If happen to found a way to make it crash (non-randomly) I guess we've reach a milestone here guys

My freezes went away once I scrapped ndiswrapper on both Lucid and
Maverick. I would guess that in my case at least, loading sketchy
windows code into the kernel was causing some serious issues.

Just an update.

The kernel options that Igor recommended seems to work fine for me
- noacpi noapm
- nohz=off
- acpi_skip_timer_override

So far I've just past the 24H uptime w/out any X server issues.. (knocking on wood)

I have a Dell Vostro 3300 (Core i5, etc) laptop and I've seen the "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s!" message twice already, with the kernel version 2.6.32-24. I'm going to collect more debug info and post it here, but see how serious this bug is for laptop owners:

Last night I shutdown my Laptop and when I saw the black screen, closed it and put it inside the case and the case into my backpack, to go home. Then, 30 min. later, I hear some crazy fan noise, open my backpack and feel some really intense heat... Men, my heart stopped! I found my laptop almost bursting into flames, the fan spinning super fast and the plastic case almost melting... Luckily I saw the bug message, shut the laptop down at time and put it open to cool faster. It still work, but I almost lost my Laptop because of this bug :(

This required me to add an xorg.conf file to identify my screen layout, but it has not made my system any less stable. I haven't seen a single xorg lockup since installing the proprietary nVidea driver.

And no, I did not remove the old driver from my system. Its existence on the disk is inconsequential.

I'm running with the default ubuntu kernel and not passing it any extra boot-time options. Here's my /proc/cmdline:

My issue is not a kernel freeze, it is clearly Xorg. I can confirm a full lockup with mouse movement, but no Xorg response. Machine is very responsive over ssh. I have killed the last application I used (firefox). - Xorg still at 100%. One CPU is 100% (2.5G) the other 1.5G.
My desktop is Xfce4.

I activated the reccomended nvidia driver 195.36.24 and also enabled compiz and now have been up for almost 2 weeks without lockups. I tried everything that caused lockups in the past without problems.

I have been running both Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 using mainline kernel 2.6.34 since June without a single freeze, on different hardware affected by the freeze. I have tested each newly released Ubuntu kernel and every one so far results in a hard freeze (with "fsck of disk remounted readonly" message on subsequent boot).

Incidentally, a default install of Fedora 13 runs solidly on the same affected systems.

Can these random freezes have something to do with motherboard problems ?

Before i ran mandirva 2009 during 1 year without problems.

Now i have these random freezes but sometimes i have even freezes during bios startup.

Hasn't happened with my desktop, but happens all the time with my new laptop. The only major difference is that my desktop has an i7 and laptop has an i5. Mostly same issues, no keyboard, no caps lock light, mouse works fine

I also have random freezes in 10.04 and 10.10 with the following symptoms:
The screen freezes, I can move my mouse but clicks do not register.
No keyboard (capslock or numluck response).
All logs show nothing related to this freeze.

When I installed the propietary drivers the problem dissapears.
So it must be related to the nouveau drivers.

I have this issue in 10.04 and 10.10 rc
At seemingly random times (unrelated to uptime) the system becomes non-responsive save for the mouse which sometime will eventually lock up as well. Usually r,e,i,s,u,b will reboot

I have had this issue starting with the initial release of 10.04, through all updates, and now in 10.10 rc as well.

As I am sure everyone can relate to, I am becoming Extremely frustrated and disappointed. This is not a run of the mill 'annoyance bug'; this is a 'show stopper bug'. Above all else, I must be able to rely on my OS to be stable. A little glitch in rendering a graphic here, or a non-functioning feature there... those are annoying, yet survivable bugs. But a bug that at seemingly random times and without warning completely locks your system-- Absolutely Unacceptable.
In effect, this bug renders me forever locked to 9.10.

I just saw the latest comment and wanted to interject.

I've had a 10.04 system running now for 109 days of uptime with no stoppages and no reboots. I have only throttled back the kernel updates and do not run X.

I'm getting this too - fresh install of Lucid - NOT impressed by this AT ALL!! Having to hard-reboot my system many times every day is UNACCEPTABLE. Time for Lucid to go.

I've been fighting this bug (Seems there may be a couple of similar bugs, see my version below*)for a couple of weeks on 10.04.1 but not on 10.10.

I got fed up trying to fix it and booted to my 10.10 install, did the latest kernel update...And it started freezing my mouse!

Went back to my 10.04.1 partition and started digging through posts in this thread, and the ubuntuforums ones.

First I tried disabling irqbalance by editing /etc/default/irqbalance and set ENABLED=0
That did not work.

Then I added acpi_skip_timer_override nohz=off to my boot options, updated burg (grub) and on reboot, NO MORE FREEZING!

*To clarify, my mouse pointer would freeze at random times or just after login, plugging another usb mouse in would work for a time than freeze also, my KB would continue to work for a while, but would eventually stop responding.

My system:
MSI MB, AMD 9950BE, 4GB RAM, Ubuntu 10.04.1 and 10.10 both x86_64, Latest Ubuntu update generic kernels.

Forgot to mention, I'm running a Nvidia GeForce 8200 and Driver 195.36.24 with X server version 1.7.6 (10706000)
Compiz and emerald with full plugins enabled. The 10.10 install is a fresh install, the 10.04.1 install is upgraded 9.04 > 9.10 > 10.04

Did you try just acpi_skip_timer_override without nohz=off (or the
other way around nohz=off without acpi...)?
In my case if I use either of them the freezes stop, so presumably you
don't need to use both of them.

I believe pinpointing the option which actually prevents freezes would
make possible to track down the bug.

Testing now with only acpi_skip_timer_override, I'll post back after 12 hours or if I get a freeze.

DAMN! had a mouse freeze, with a message of pulseaudio[2011]: ratelimit.c: 437 events suppressed. I was listening to a mp3 in totem in the background and surfing with firefox 3.6.11.

I plugged in my Logitech usb wireless mouse and it seems to be working longer than it usually does after this event (Still playing a mp3 in Totem).

I'm going to re-add nohz=off and continue playing the MP3 in Totem.

Same here, 10.10 was relatively freeze free for me too, the first one
happened after installing banshee and playing an mp3. I added both
options mentioned above and have suffered another full lockup (sound
stopped, mouse froze, hard reset required) in the meantime while
watching tv and typing an email in chromium on google mail.

I think I'll try disabling pulseaudio next. Any good pointers out
there to show how this is done or isn't this possible anymore with
10.10? I seem to remember a howto on how to revert to alsa.

My issue only freezes the mouse pointer (System is still stable and responds to KB commands). I did remove Pulseaudio last night and installed oss4, if anything the freeze came even quicker, I've since gone back to pulseaudio.

For what it's worth, I leave my system running all night playing either Video or MP3's and as long as the mouse is not moved, it never freezes. I'm basically at my whits end (Mouse #2 just froze, switching to usb mouse #3).

If I can't find a solution soon I'm going to try 2.6.31RT Kernel.

responsible.
One reason is that I could reproduce the crash every time in both ubuntu and
pc linux by running "Test Video Card"

To try to fix the issue, I recently bought a cheap maxtor video card to put
into the machine and try out. But I haven't been able to get that to work at
all in my dell desktop.
That got me tweaking the bios - BTW: I've got an old Pentium 4 Dell Optiplex
GX260 Desktop

In the bios is a setting "Onboard Video Buffer" which could be set as 1MB or
8MB. It was set to 1 and I changed it to 8MB.
After that, I could successfully run the Video Card Test without fail so at
this point I'm very hopeful my issue is sorted. I have never ever been able
to do that and the symptom was always the same black screen crash.

Info provided in case anyone else could benefit from this bios setting also.

I have not had a crash since (couple of days) but it's too early to say
anything for sure at this point. Will post again if I do have a crash.
