Runar Ingebrigtsen, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc1-quantal

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Christopher,

I'm trying out upstream kernel 3.4-precise, the latest for the 12.04
release. I'll report any further freezes, or if the freeze disappears
within a week.

I've used the 3.4 kernel for a few days and not seen any freezes.

Anything more I can do?

Runar Ingebrigtsen, thank you for testing the newest BIOS. As per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/info/kernel-version-map.html the last known bad Ubuntu kernel 3.2.0-32.51 is based on mainline 3.2.30. The last known good mainline kernel is v3.4.

So, the next step is to perform a reverse mainline kernel bisect from 3.2.30 to v3.4, in order to identify the last bad upstream kernel version, followed consecutively in version by the first good one. As per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ we have:
v3.2.30-precise/
v3.2.31-precise/
v3.2.32-precise/
v3.2.33-precise/
v3.3-precise/
v3.3-rc1-precise/
v3.3-rc2-precise/
v3.3-rc3-precise/
v3.3-rc4-precise/
v3.3-rc5-precise/
v3.3-rc6-precise/
v3.3-rc7-precise/
v3.3.1-precise/
v3.3.2-precise/
v3.3.3-precise/
v3.3.4-precise/
v3.3.5-precise/
v3.3.6-precise/
v3.3.7-precise/
v3.3.8-quantal/
v3.4-precise/

Hence, could you please test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3-rc5-precise/ ?

Once tested, could you please continue to reverse mainline kernel bisect following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi, sorry about not having the time to go through all the testing at the time.

Nor I am using Raring, and the problem persist. Just thought I would let you know.

The funny thing is that I never had this problem with Linux Mint: http://www.linlap.com/hp_probook_6470b

I will comment again if I find time to perform the testing.

I've updated the BIOS:
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
68ICE Ver. F.45
10/07/2013

Will now test running on battery to see if it'll freeze.

Thank you for the reminder and sorry for the trouble. :)

And that's how long it took to get a freeze and perform a hard reboot.
