According to StuartN (see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1478787) using 2.6.33 mainline kernel solves the problem. However jonolumb still experiences freezes (far less ofthe though).
There is an interesting thing with the recovery/single mode. According to bdcalvert and me, It seems that if booted in single/recovery mode, there are no freezes (or at least the're far far far less frequent).
