Ah, sso I think this bug and bug 619397 are actually duplicates. When you remove the power cable, then gnome-power-manager tries to adjust the screen brightness.
So this looks like a bug in the ATI kernel DRM driver. Do you get the freeze if you do this?
echo 3 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness
