Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

I have had lots of problem with freezes of my laptop. This bug report addresses freezes when changing the brightness via the fn buttons.

This is a summary of how I reproduce the problem
Start the computer
Press fn+f7 or fn+f8 [brightness down, brightness up]
Computer freezes
Only way to continue is a hard reset

I am using a HP Compaq Presario CQ61 402E0
I am not using the ATI restricted module although I have an ATI card

Here is a summary of all the fn buttons:

kern_fnf7.log is taken after the laptop rebooted after I pressed fn-f7 (brightness down), freeze and hard reboot.

When it freezes, can you press control-alt-f1 and get to a text terminal? After that, if you press Ctrl-alt-f7 (could also be f8), do you get back to the graphical environment, and does it work again?

"When it freezes, can you press control-alt-f1 and get to a text terminal?" - No. I do not get a text terminal when pressing ctrl-alt-f1. (I have confirmed that this combination works when the laptop is not in frozen)

I have done a number of additional tests. These tests include starting in recovery mode, starting with the option nomodeset and removing the process gnome-power-manager. Here are the results:

Recovery mode
Blinking cursor half way down the screen - No menu or prompt appear.
Pressing fn-f7
!! Still a freeze when pressing fn-f7

nomodeset + graphical mode
Startup as normal
Press fn+f7
!! No freeze
Screen dim as intended

nomodeset + recovery mode
Startup as normal
In the menu I chose root in prompt
Press fn-f7
!! No freeze
Screen dim as intended

killall gnome-power-manager
Pressing fn-f7
!! Still a freeze when pressing the buttons
Hard reboot required
