I'm just a novice at this, but it looks like Luca's stacktrace is missing debug symbols (eg. libdbus-1-3-dbgsym). Has anyone found a reproducible action that causes the crash?

those logs have no error, why did you change the bug to triaged?

getting a log of the error is not trivial, I've renamed gvfsd-trash to gvfsd-trash-binary and wrote and small gvfsd-trash wrapper which calls the real binary under valgrind, the log have some jump errors sometime but those lack the first two symbols as the stacktrace on this bug do, which is weird because libgioremote-volume-monitor.so which seems to be the concerned code has debug symbols

The report was incomplete since it was lacking a valgrind log, so I triaged it since that's what I provided. I didn't realise they didn't capture the error; setting back to Incomplete.

We know this problem exists, no more confirmation is needed. It would
help if somebody could obtain a valgrind log following the instructions

The action is to login, so you need to run valgrind on startup. I haven't had any success myself, but I'm guessing that it has something to do with modifying /usr/share/gvfs/mounts/trash.mount .

Valgrind - not sure how useful it is. How can I install symbols.

Renamed to gvfsd-trash-debug and created gvfsd-trash containing:

G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=/tmp/valgrind.log /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash-debug

Hew (hew) wrote :

Thanks for your valgrind.log Ken. I've talked with afflux in #ubuntu-bugs about your log, and he had this to say:

You'll definitely need libc6-dbgsym libglib2.0-0-dbgsym and gvfs-dbgsym, maybe gvfs-backends-dbgsym and libgvfscommon0-dbgsym, unlikely are the ones for: libdbus-1-3, libgnome-keyring0, libpcre3 and libselinux1

So if you install all those and get another log, you should have everything covered. Thanks again for your help!

Now waiting for an actual crash. It happens so randomly with me it may be a while. If you want to help here are the steps I have taken so far:

Added to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com intrepid main universe

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libc6-dbgsym libglib2.0-0-dbgsym gvfs-dbgsym gvfs-backends-dbgsym libgvfscommon0-dbgsym

then create script as per:
#!/bin/sh

G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=/tmp/valgrind.log /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash-debug

Ubuntu 8.10 x86 LiveCD Alpha-4 release (kernel 2.6.26.5-generic)

As a non-expert user I just had difficulty finding a PC that would actually load this LiveCD session and it then wouldn't allow 'at' key entry for logging in to make this report (I had to use Ctrl_V of a text file created on another working PC to do that)
The Alpha-4 x86 LiveCD wouldn't even load on an E2160 or on an E4600 based PC.
Fortunately, I had someone's old 2.8GHz Northwood PC that I could try and it promptly generated this error report.

Meanwhile, keep up the good work folks !

According to seb, this bug is a difficult to resolve problem resulting from use of dbus in a threaded environment, which may or may not be fixed upstream for GNOME 2.24. However, the greatest practical impact for users is the apport dialog itself, because this crash appears to only happen on gvfsd-trash shutdown, and gvfsd-trash is auto-respawned in the event of a crash. An apport bug pattern has been added to catch duplicates and I've updated the documentation for the Technical Overview, so I'm going ahead and dropping the milestone from this bug.

That's a good question. The "crash" comes up immediately after logging in for the first time after a reboot or cold start. I am new to the testing process as I was asked to participate about three weeks ago. I am on Alpha-5 8.10.

Firefox doesnt launch trash so i dont see how the 2 are related. I would
assume if you are right than its not the bug that everyone else is
seeing since most people get it on login it may take 30seconds to a

Zu eurer Info: Das war anscheinend eine weitergeleitete Mail, die ich

Den ursprünglichen Absender solcher Mails mit solchen Links zuzumüllen,
