Bug Description

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

The new FUSA applet has some important issues comparing with the previous Hardy's Logout dialog functionality:

1. Lack of usability: it’s easy to click on Suspend when you want to click on Log out, or Restart instead of Hibernate, for instance. Also, there’s no confirmation warning when you click on any of these options. The Hardy’s logout dialog has big icons with big space between them, so it’s practically impossible to click on an icon by mistake.
2. Lack of information: the Hardy’s logout dialog explain what “Suspend” means when you put the mouse over the button (VERY necessary for newbies). New FUSE applet doesn’t explain what’s the difference between “Log out”, “Suspend” & “Hibernate”. Not even a bare tooltip.
3. Lack of consistency: presence options has icons; exit options doesn’t.
4. Lack of scalability: what if I have many many users in my system?
5. Waste of space: the applet takes to much space in the panel.
6. Duplicity: the presence icon in the GNOME panel is duplicated with the Pidgin applet.

IMHO, the Ubuntu team must reconsider the current FUSE design for Jaunty.

Thanks in advance.

#1: Confirmation would be nice, agreed
#2: Tooltips need to be added then
#3: This was on purpose to keep from cluttering the menu. What sort of small, simple icons would make sense for those actions that won't look too similar?
#4: I discussed this with Ted a few days ago. When there are many users, only the currently active users will be shown in future versions. There wasn't time to implement this for Intrepid, but I think he plans it for Jaunty. (Ted, can you comment?)
#5: If you dislike the default view, you can still change it to the narrow view where it just shows a "users" icon with the status icon instead of saying your name.
#6: Pidgin shouldn't be using the notification area for things that aren't notifications to begin with.

Thanks for the reply, Mackenzie.

About #1, adding a confirmation will imply three mouse clicks to proceed, instead of the two clicks needed in Hardy. (Not a very big problem, anyway.)

About #6, how can I hide the Pidgin icon in the notification area without losing all its functionality? That icon is the entry point to the Pidgin application.

Thanks again.

In Preferences you can tell it to only show on new messages. It won't be possible to make the buddy list invisible anymore though...that'd have to go to simple minimizing.

To have the buddy list always flying around the desktop isn't a very good idea, IMHO.

To minimize #1, what about drawing a separator line between the "dangerous" options, like the one already drawed between "Lock screen" and "Logout"?

Another solution would be to increase the size ("height") of the menu items. That way, each option would have a larger click area, reducing the probability of a mistake.

With regard to point #4, here is a screenshot of what happens with the fusa applet inside a network with hundreds of users (I have blurred the names in the image to make them non-readable).
I can move the cursor between all names, but the window does not scroll, so that after the first names I cannot see which one I'm choosing. There should be scrollbars and a way to display names beginning with a few letters of choice.

#2, I agree that tooltips are needed.
#3, I don't see that as problematic but wouldn't care either way.
#4 is a serious problem. I propose that the number be capped at some arbitrary number of users (say 5).
#5, I would like to see it with no users icon at all. Since it's always going to show either a shutdown or presence icon, what's the point of the user's icon? That option should be changed to be nothing (in the "My Name"/"Users"/[users icon] space.
#6 is bug #273220

Oh, also, in Jaunty, #6 will be eliminated in the default configuration (most likely) since Pidgin is (mostly likely) being replaced with Empathy.

I strongly agree with Richard on #5. There is no need at all to show that users icon next to the status icon, and the option should be changed to simply "show nothing". Currently, it looks like two distinct applets. Besides, the particular choice of icon is unfortunate: an old gtk stock icon that blends neither with the current tango-based gnome icon theme, nor with the default ubuntu icon theme, and just looks terribly out place. Anyway, an option to show the status icon and only the status icon would be greatly appreciated.
