Vmware server missing in Gutsy

Bug Description

vmware server is missing from the package lineup for Gutsy AMD64 (Can't comment on the other variants).

I guess this isn't a bug really but more of a wish.

It was in feisty 32bit and I use it a lot, but having got a new amd64 machine from developing on I am probably going to need to do something artful.

Feisty AMD64 fails at CD install/boot as it wont see the SATA/IDE drive.

Following the above I checked my sources and updates etc and found that
either the gutsy commercial repository does'nt yet exist or the supplied
source entries are buggy.

updates fail with the following.

http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy/commercial/binary-amd64/Packages.gz:
404 Not Found
http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy/commercial/source/Sources.gz:
404 Not Found

It could be worth putting some empty gz's up if there is nothing yet for
the repository to kill the errors.

hope this helps

Cheers

The additional problem with this is that once you have upgraded to the kernel in gutsy you can no longer run vmware-server with the vmware-server-kernel-modules package since there isn't one for the gutsy stream kernels. Not only that, but I've been told by people in #ubuntu-kernel there is no planned support for those packages either. This is unfortunate as the newest vmware-server (1.0.4) installs and builds kernel modules without a hitch on i386 (no patches needed) and so there really should be no roadblock for this.

Yes, I've seen this as well in the Gutsy final release I just upgraded to last night. vmware-server 1.0.3 will not run in Gutsy because of the kernel modules mismatch.

Workaround:
1. Back up your license file found in: /etc/vmware/license.vs.1.0-00 or at least save the serial contained in that file somewhere.
2. Uninstall vmware-server 1.0.3 including purging all configuration.
3. Make sure you have the package build-essential
4. Download vmware-server 1.0.4 directly from http://vmware.com/download/server/
5. Unpack and run vmware-install.pl, usually it is fine to accept all defaults, and enter the license key from step 1.

and you should be back up and running.

But if it is that simple to do, and there's "rules" files from previous versions. Shouldn't a new package be out in less than 5 minutes if someone decided to build one?

I'm sure the above solution works like a charm, but I'd prefer a solution that's handeled by the package manager.

The needed kernel-module used to be in multiverse. So the real problem is that there's no newly compiled kernel-module.

In addition to Vmware, Opera is no longer available through apt.

Enable the partner repository. Opera is available through apt once again.

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu gutsy partner

any update on vmware-server? will we see it packaged in the partner repository? right now i'm holding my desktop back, waiting for vmware-server to catch up with gutsy. i could go about to download and install it manually, but since i'm not really in a rush, i can wait for a package -- is one planned?

For your information, you can install vmware from the rpm package downlodable on the officiel web site.

sudo /tmp/vmware-server-distrib/bin/vmware-uninstall.pl
sudo apt-get install alien

download the rpm (sudo /tmp/vmware-server-distrib/bin/vmware-uninstall.pl)

make the deb package : sudo alien --script /path/to/the/rpm/VMware-server-1.0.4-56528.i386.rpm

double-click the generated deb and install it graphically.

sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl

The packages in the "partner" repository are commercial (free and/or non-free) packages that Canonical customers pay to get packaged / verified / maintained in different ways. As such, it is easier to ask any give package's original publisher (in this case vmware) about its availability.

This being said, I just asked one of the people in charge of commercial packaging at Canonical and I was told this specific package is being worked on and should be available "soon".

Just to be clear, the process to get a pakage in the "partner" repository (previously known as "commercial" in other Ubuntu versions) is a commercial deal between a third party and Canonical, not a community-driven process.

Just got to this bug after investigating why a friend's vmware-player installation from 7.04's commercial repo no longer works after upgrading to 7.10. We don't want to move away from repo-supplied packages since smooth upgrades is one of its key advantages. However, it does seem that a big warning that VMWare would stop working on doing the upgrade should have been very prominent. Please consider this for future releases -- for some users the ability to run their old Win32 installations for that one important program is a key factor in their ability to move to Ubuntu for everything else. Looking forward to it becoming available in the `partner' repo.

Dare I suggest that users itching to get this use Automatix? The supposed reports of automatix's demise after Gutsy were obviously premature - VMware player and server, among other things, are in the Automatix2 release.

Ok - and I will take that back. Automatix2 will not be able to do VMWare stuff until it is in the partner Repos... Manual install then I suppose.

Hey all, I see the vmware-server package is already in the partner repo, try it. And close this bug if it's OK to you. It's not in the "Add/Remove..." program, you'll have to use Synaptic to install it.

What about vmware-player? That used to be in the old repo. structure but hasn't appeared in the new one yet. Is it intended that it will? I'm not sure of the differences between vmware-server and vmware-player but having installed player people are going to expect an `apt-get upgrade' to do its stuff one day.

Yan Li (yanli) wrote : Re: [Bug 133020] Re: Vmware server missing in Gutsy

Ralph, though from the same mother, vmware-server and vmware-player
are two different products, just like Mercedes-Benz 300 compared with
Benz 500. vmware-player is a light-weight player-only product with
limited management feature, while vmware-server is a full-fledged VM
product giving for free aimed for bigger market share and threats from
Xen. You can't upgrade vmware-player to vmware-server.

Ralph Corderoy (ralph-inputplus) wrote :

Thanks Yan. I realised player couldn't be upgraded to server, I was
trying to say that those with player installed from pre-Gutsy will
expect it to be upgraded one-day to a Gutsy player. If you're saying
that server is a super-set of player then that's fine and maybe we don't
need player on Gutsy, but somehow people need to be made aware that they
should switch to that instead.

However, a bit of a Google suggests that they're aimed at two different
purposes, with player being better for running one VM that isn't
headless.

Any official news of whether player will also appear in time?

Ralph you must have missed something. I saw vmware-player in the
partner repo from the first day Gutsy was released. You can install it
by using "Add/Remove Applications". Are you using x86-64 version of
Gutsy?

Yes, Gutsy on AMD64 CPU. I can see vmware-server, but only since it was
recently released, but not a Gutsy version of vmware-player.

    $ apt-cache search vmware-player
    vmware-player-kernel-modules - vmware-player kernel module dependency package
    vmware-player-kernel-modules-2.6.20-16 - vmware-player modules for Linux (kernel 2.6.20)
    $ apt-cache search vmware-server
    vmware-server - Free virtual machine server from VMware
    vmware-server-kernel-modules - vmware-server kernel module dependency package
    vmware-server-kernel-modules-2.6.22-14 - vmware-server modules for Linux (kernel 2.6.22)
    vmware-server-kernel-source - Kernel modules for VMware Server.
    $

    $ dpkg -s vmware-player | grep Version
    Version: 1.0.2-2
    Config-Version: 1.0.2-2
    $ dpkg -s vmware-server | grep Version
    Version: 1.0.4-1gutsy2
    $

Nor can I see it under
http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/pool/partner/v/ or in
http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy/partner/binary-amd64/Packages
Where do you see it?

@Ralph, this is really interesting. I tried those commands you've
tried and got same results. The only way I can see that VMware Player
is in "Add/Remove Application" GUI program. Start it from
"Applications" -> "Add/Remove...". Change the application category on
top-right corner to "Third party applications", select "All" in the
left column, then I can see "Opera" and "VMware Player" listed. I'm
using x86 rather than x86-64.
