Martin Cleaver, have you enabled the partner repo? That means you
should have a line like this in the "/etc/apt/sources.list":
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu gutsy partner

On my system:
$ apt-cache show vmware-server
Package: vmware-server
Priority: optional
Section: partner/misc
Installed-Size: 127592
Maintainer: VMware Build Team <email address hidden>
