Confirmed on behalf of Dimmuxx on #ubuntu+1 - it looks like 0.8.1-1 (which is only in i386 at this time) has lost those files.

This bug was fixed in the package plymouth - 0.8.1-1ubuntu1

---------------
plymouth (0.8.1-1ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * ubuntu-logo theme:
    - move the entry box below the passphrase prompt where it belongs.
      LP: #540685, #540806
    - add some code to notice if our text boxes are going to run off the
      bottom of the screen, and move them up in that case.
  * debian/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth: fix to work with the new
    update-alternatives theme handling. LP: #549247
  * include the vga16fb renderer in the initramfs.

Same here... plymouth 0.8.1-1ubuntu1 doesn't seem to fix the problem?

Yes, it does. The initramfs hook in plymouth 0.8.1-1ubuntu1 does not call plymouth-set-default-theme.

If something else is calling plymouth-set-default-theme, please file a separate bug report about that with a *full* error message.

If you're seeing problems because *you're* trying to call 'plymouth-set-default-theme', well, don't do that. The way to change your theme now is by running 'update-alternatives --config default.plymouth'.
