Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-session

gnome-session 2.29.6-0ubuntu4 has replaced the familiar "Shut Down" with "Switch Off" in the power button menu. This is not a term that's used in en_US. if "shut down" doesn't work for some reason, then "power off" or "turn off" would be reasonable substitutes, but "switch off" is jarringly unfamiliar. Given that en_US has no translation team, I think one of these other wordings should be used as the default C locale string and "switch off" should be moved to an en_GB langpack.

I'm an en_US speaker who supports this change. "Switch Off" just feels very strange, and it's not immediately obvious what it does. "Turn Off" would be the best of the alternatives--when talking about any electronic device (phones, tvs, etc.), we say "I'm going to turn off the tv."

+1 for changing it to "Turn Off"

Switch off works, but its not the best translation.

I think "Power Off" or "Power Down" would be much better descriptions than "Switch Off". "Turn off" would also work, but it's a bit colloquial. "Turn Off..." would also be kind of weird without the word "computer" or some other descriptive noun afterwards. I feel the word "Power" reminds the user that they'll be shutting their computer completely off. Agreed that "Switch Off" just sounds odd (to me it sounds very European/British) and it will not translate well, at least to U.S. users.

Per my updated Lucid, "Shut Down" is appearing in the menu applet, but the dialog box that appears asking you to confirm your action still uses "Switch Off" in the window title and the button title.

Steve, you are wrong.

The confirmation dialog still use "Switch Off" in both title and button (updated 10 seconds ago). Check the file src/dialog.c in master branch too.

Ah, yes; I see that now in the confirmation dialog.

And yes, after upgrading gnome-session today, the Ctrl-Alt-Del dialog is fixed.

And now I've just found another instance of this in gdm; opening a new task :/

"Shut Down" instead of "Switch Off" is still ambiguous and unfamiliar.

Instead of reverting back, take the opportunity to correct. What are you doing by selecting that option - asking the OS to close (just as you Close all applications when clicking the X) and the computer to power off. Thus, "Power Off" is by far the most logical and obvious phrase that should be used here.

reverting back gives us something translated and documented where changing for something new would mean having to redo the changes for all locales and documentations which should be done earlier in a cycle
