Bug Description

Binary package hint: usb-creator

ubuntu 8.10 final. no updates. usb disk creator crashes almost immediately after clicking make startup disk. I think this is the crash generated from attempting to shutdown. I saw another bug for the crash on attempting to create the disk.

Ok just to clarify, the usb drive I was using was formatted as FAT-16 and had a couple files/folders on it.

I installed usb-creator 0.1.10 to ubuntu 8.04 and tried it again; it still didn't work.

Next I installed gparted and formatted the usb drive to FAT-16, thus erasing the files.

I tried usb-creator again and this time it worked.

I had a similar problem.
crash report almost immediately on trying to make a USB start up disk from a live session.
then it will not quit the program. creating another crash report.
Mine is formatted to FAT.

try formatting it with gparted first

This crash has the same stack trace characteristics as bug #277869. However, the latter was already fixed in an earlier package version than the one in this report. This might be a regression or because the problem is in a dependent package.

Hello!!
I'm still fighting with that problem... How you did it? Just trying from
already installed Ubuntu instead of LiveCD? or you did something to the
pendrive itself (formated with gparted or fdisk).

Mine is just 1Gb, maybe it's part of the problem, but seems that it should
work... Any help will be welcome, for me this is the most important and
useful new feature in Ubuntu 8.10 by far!!!

Thanks in advance!

you must format the drive to fat-16 using gparted. be careful to format the usb drive and not your hard drive.
it is installed on the live cd and you can install it on a hdd installation by the following command
sudo aptitude install gparted

it is located in

This bug was fixed in the package usb-creator - 0.1.11

---------------
usb-creator (0.1.11) jaunty; urgency=low

  [ Evan Dandrea ]
  * Strip null bytes from the CD label when parsing it from an ISO file
    (LP: #287318).
  * Internally represent the persistent file size in bytes for greater
    accuracy.
  * Move self.pipe declaration to the correct location (LP: #291645).
  * Add a bootloader installation progress message.
  * Install the bootloader to the MBR as well (LP: #273477).
  * Specify the filesystem type when mounting iso9660 images.
  * Warn the user when usb-creator cannot mount an image (LP: #287753).
  * i18n support (LP: #285413, #292556).
  * Added Swedish tranlsation (LP: #285811). Thanks Daniel Nylander.
  * Add -t option to write a trace file.
  * Don't include all .py files in the tree for translation.
  * Don't update the pot file on every build.
  * Write more information to the log (subprocesses, stderr, etc).

  [ Martin Owens ]
  * Fix small issue where enlarging the main window would have a different
expanding effect on the top listview from the bottom listview.
  * Add gnomevfs support to use gnome device labels and icons. This should
    make things more user friendly.

  [ Mario Limonciello ]
  * Add support for providing command line ISO images.
  * Add support for defaulting the persistence setting in the UI via
    command line.
  * Default the GUI to start up centered on the screen.
