Bug Description

Hey,
I started usb-creator on my up-to-date intrepid-PC and tried to select ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso

It opens a window that says "This is not a desktop install CD and thus cannot be used by this application".

I think this is the real problem:
[21:59:49] ('', 'mount: you must specify the filesystem type\n')

Here is the whole output:

~$ usb-creator
/usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:273: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "panel_bg.png"

This bug was fixed in the package usb-creator - 0.1.11

---------------
usb-creator (0.1.11) jaunty; urgency=low

  [ Evan Dandrea ]
  * Strip null bytes from the CD label when parsing it from an ISO file
    (LP: #287318).
  * Internally represent the persistent file size in bytes for greater
    accuracy.
  * Move self.pipe declaration to the correct location (LP: #291645).
  * Add a bootloader installation progress message.
  * Install the bootloader to the MBR as well (LP: #273477).
  * Specify the filesystem type when mounting iso9660 images.
  * Warn the user when usb-creator cannot mount an image (LP: #287753).
  * i18n support (LP: #285413, #292556).
  * Added Swedish tranlsation (LP: #285811). Thanks Daniel Nylander.
  * Add -t option to write a trace file.
  * Don't include all .py files in the tree for translation.
  * Don't update the pot file on every build.
  * Write more information to the log (subprocesses, stderr, etc).

  [ Martin Owens ]
  * Fix small issue where enlarging the main window would have a different
expanding effect on the top listview from the bottom listview.
  * Add gnomevfs support to use gnome device labels and icons. This should
    make things more user friendly.

  [ Mario Limonciello ]
  * Add support for providing command line ISO images.
  * Add support for defaulting the persistence setting in the UI via
    command line.
  * Default the GUI to start up centered on the screen.

Has this dialog been completely removed for 0.2.12 in karmic? I was able to accidentally copy a DVD of files (not a linux distribution disc) to a usb drive without seeing this error. I would assume that is why it was there in the first place. Evan, how should usb-creator restrict access to certain discs/ISOs if they are not valid, if you believe there should be any enforcement via software in this case.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes to usb-creator since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu release (10.04). If you can still reproduce this issue with usb-creator 0.2.22, we would appreciate if you could explain the steps taken, the expected result and the actual result. Uploading updated logs by running "apport-collect 287753", and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue would also be helpful.
