Spell checking does not work across system

Bug Description

Spell checking does not work at all in gedit, Evolution and across Open Office.

I the English (United Kingdom) dictionaries installed and set up for me when I installed Ubuntu. This is a clean Ubuntu Intrepid alpha 6 install on i386, all updates applied as of today. (Firefox's speller is fine, but then that's a separate entity AFAIK)

The behaviour is different according to application:

GEDIT: (I originally posted this in bug 19497 comment 3)
1. Open gedit
2. Click "Tools" -> "Check Spelling" or "Set Language...", OR Check "Autocheck Spelling" and type a word & press space
3. gedit hangs, no crash, but no redraw and need to end process.

OO & Evolution:
* No incorrectly spelled words are highlighted
* In OO: Spell check just completes as if everything's ok with no detection of bad words

Please let me know what other information I can provide.
