The bug happens because there is no aspell-<locale> dictionnary installed. It's
fixed with this upload:

 gedit (2.11.91-0ubuntu1) breezy; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version:
     - fix a potential crasher in the spell plugin (Ubuntu: #13253).
     - fix a runtime warning due to an api change in recent-files.
     - remove preferences for Undo .
     - minor string fixes.

This is happening to me in version 2.24.0-0ubuntu1 under Intrepid alpha 6.

To recreate:
1. Open gedit
2. Click "Tools" -> "Check Spelling" or "Set Language...", OR Check "Autocheck Spelling" and type a word & press space
3. gedit hangs, no crash, but no redraw and need to end process.
