Bug Description

in intrepid, the user account switcher panel applet is placed after the time. this looks quite ugly compared to how it was previously, plus the change is confusing to people who are used to the (far superior) old layout of the top panel. if this is intentional, there is no need for this change and i strongly dissaprove of it.

it also leaves too large of an area with just text and no icons, which also looks awkward. overall, its a major eyesore. it looks so much more natural with the time right next to the power button, and the user switcher to the left of the notification area.

also, the reason why i chose ubuntu out of all of the other distros was because it works out of the box, its the most popular, but even more of a reason than those two is because of the arrangement of the panel. ubuntu had the best panel arrangement i had ever seen out of all of the distrobutions, and now your killing it. what is wrong with you guys. this is really pissing me off to be frank. ubuntu has the best default panel arrangement out of all of the distros, and you %#$@ it up.

anyway, if this is intentional, put it back the way it was. there is no compelling need to change the default panel arrangement, and it was more than fine before. dont %#$@ with it. if you want, you might just remove the user switcher from the default arrangement all together, but i think it looked fine in gutsy and hardy. whatever, just put the default panel icons back the way they were meant to be in the final intrepid release

let me know about this situation, please reply

This was a design decision. The fast-user-switch-applet is now replacing the logout button since it includes that functionality. It was thus moved to where the icon it is replacing was.

woah, wait a sec!

something else i noticed: the picture of the power button is a little cut off at the top! check it out for yourself. the power button icon is shaved off at the top. you guys are going to fix this, right?

also, there is no indication that the fast user switcher is actually used for switching users until you create a new user. by default, the fast user switcher is just a power manager. this does not make sense to me, and it will not make sense to anyone i set in front of an ubuntu 8.10 machine. in fact, i didnt even know that it was possible to switch users using the fast user switcher until i tested it out!

also, switching users has nothing to do with your power settings.

look, this whole thing just doesnt make sense, and i dont think it will make sense to very many people either, so i propose having a separate power button and a separate new user switcher that integrates with pidgin.

which brings to light: as soon as you start up pidgin, the power button disappears immediately. this will also confuse people. yet another inconsistency.

its nice that it can integrate with pidgin, so i have a great idea that im sure everyone will like:

1. you can put the user switcher where it used to be, and have a separate power button

2. you should remove the power options from the user switcher menu, and have it do just user-related things. in this place, you will be able to change your user, change your pidgin status, and lock your screen.

3. the separate power button will always be there at the top-right of the screen, and will always have the power icon. clicking it will ask you what power-related thing you want to do, just like in the last release

the bottom line: the user switcher was meant for doing user-related things. the power button was meant for doing power-related things. there have been many, many problems that have arised from trying to mix them, including confusion, inconsistency, and aesthetic issues. due to these bugs, problems, and flaws that have arisen, it would be better and easier to have it the way it used to, as i described above (1, 2, 3). I am sure that now that i have brought these problems to light it will lad to the bug being re-opened and action being done.

please respond. thank you in advance

what i said above means its up to you (the people in charge) to fix these problems, and i am completely useless to you if you disregard me. i represent the users of ubuntu, as i am one of them, and this is what we think.

also, i think that we should use Bug #279939 for comments, and this bug should be marked a duplicate of Bug #279939 and not vice versa. please remove the duplicate status from Bug #279939 and mark this one as a duplicate instead

I'm going against the grain here. I like the change to combine the power and fast-user switcher into a single, easy to use menu. Yes, the pixels on the power button are cut off, but intrepid is still beta, and there is time for this bit of art to be fixed (TBH, I'd rather the art was a little off and the function worked then the art perfect and a problem with the function).

I support this new change in menu functionality because not only is it faster then using the power button previously (waiting for the screen to fade and the options to appear) but it also minimises task bar space since you don't require the extra user menu. If you don't like this option, you can always just add the old user switcher to the task bar (Right click "add to panel") which would take less time then posting a "bug" report with negativity.

Thank you for your comment. The moving of the applet was intentional. Please move it back if you prefer it to be in a different location.
