Bug Description

I've installed Intrepid alpha 5 and go-home-applet, window-picker-applet, maximus and netbook-launcher from Intrepid repositories
Whereas Launcher had no visual default with Hardy, labels under icons are not visible unless the mouse pointer hovers the icon
Besides, the old bug concerning french caracters is back (Bug 260470)
See screenshot

Are there any usual suspects I could change with my graphics driver settings/theme settings/clutter environment variables?

seeing the same issue with netbook-launcher pulled in through the ubuntu-mobile metapackage on the samsung Q1 ultra in intrepid i noticed that it doesnt seem to happen all the time, every 10th to 20th boot the fonts for categories and the iconview show up fine (folder text bing still broken), though after next reboot/restart of the desktop the problem is back ...
it appears to be triggered by the first redraw of the screen and i wonder if its not actually an intel driver prob, seems all people commenting here use the intel driver.

I cannot reproduce this on a Dell Mini, and I'm slightly concerned by the "Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager. Falling back to classic." message on startup, as I am not seeing it, and apparently those who are effected are.

Oliver, could you confirm if you see the same message on startup in your environment? Until I'll go and find out what it means!

Okay, please try out the latest commit (136), which should have fixed this problem.

The issue is that some Intel drivers don't do mipmapping properly and Clutter's font-cache ends up being non-existent. Forcibly disabling mipmapping before the fonts are created should fix this.

Testing appreciated, I've left the bug open until we have some confirmed fixes.

I'm running Intrepid up-to-date from Main Server and the 1st (no text under icons) and 2nd (concerning french caracters) bugs are still there.

To complete the report, i should have precised that the launcher shows text under icons when it launches, until the mouse pointer hovers the launcher

Right, this hasn't been packaged yet, I was looking for someone to test from bzr. I'll try and build an updated package for you to test, but I don't think the fix will land in Intrepid proper until next week (Oliver?).

ive tried :
bzr branch lp:~netbook-remix-team/netbook-remix-launcher/clutter-0-8-intrepid
./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install

and the 1st bug is fixed (no text under icons) :-)

2nd bug is still there (accented letters (french characters) are not supported )

hmm, if you still need more people to verify this bug is fixed (while 260470 might still not be), I would like to help out - however, I do not seem to be able to check out bzr without registering my ssh key with launchpad, which I think I am not allowed to do. Is there a different way to get at the code?

Uh, yah, problem between keyboard and chair. Thanks anyway, I've now compiled and started latest git, and it works perfectly now. Regarding that other bug (260470): while I have no French accents in my menu anyway, German umlauts seem to work fine.

Good stuff!

I have done a fresh install on my new Acer Aspire one (120 GB HD) and have the same problem as shown in the screen shot above. When the menu loads it looks perfect, but then when I mouse over it all the text goes away.

I have run:
bzr branch lp:~netbook-remix-team/netbook-remix-launcher/clutter-0-8-intrepid

but when I run the autogen script I get the following:

checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes
checking for DEPS... configure: error: Package requirements (clutter-0.8

No package 'gnome-desktop-2.0' found
No package 'libwnck-1.0' found
No package 'libstartup-notification-1.0' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables DEPS_CFLAGS
and DEPS_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

I have confirmed that all the things listed are installed, what can I do to fix this problem? Or when can I hope to see an updated .deb package?

Thanks for this thread, I have found it very insightful.

Now that I have installed the updated version the launcher is working perfectly.

Hi,

I can also confirm that the issue is fixed with the change from bzr.#

Neil, I can upload a fixed package for you. Just let me know whether you would
like me to cherry-pick this change, or to package a new bzr snapshot.

Thanks,

James
