Bug Description

Using an US International Keyboard, you should be able to type '«' by pressing RIGHT_ALT + '['.
Actually every time I start or reboot my Hardy install, this is not working. To make it work I need to start the Keyboard Preferences from the menu, then in the options select and deselect one of the option (for example add Euro sign to 'E', and only to make the system reload the keyboard mapping). After this the keyboard will correctly type this '«'.

This problem didn't happened on Gutsy, from which I updated my install.

Here following further informations about my config.

#lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

#gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
layouts = [us intl,us alt-intl]
model =
options = [lv3 lv3:ralt_switch,grp grp:alts_toggle,eurosign eurosign:e]
overrideSettings = true

#xorg.conf
Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
 Driver "kbd"
 Option "CoreKeyboard"
 Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
 Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
 Option "XkbLayout" "us"
 Option "XkbVariant" "alt-intl"
 Option "XkbOptions" "lv3:ralt_switch"
EndSection

Probably this problem could be related to bug 226129 [ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/226129 ].

Reporter, do you have autologin enabled for your system?

Yes, I do have autologin on my user.
I will try to disable it and see what happens.

Thanks to Simos Xenitellis.
So is this but related to GDM?

Hi michelinux,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

I just updated my Ubuntu box and this is not happening anymore in Intrepid.
Although, this bug did still exist in Hardy: not sure you can consider it fixed or not.

Thanks for letting us know its fixed in Intrepid. I've opened a task for Hardy since you indicate it's still an issue there.

Hello, I have this issue on jaunty now. I have gdm autologin enabled. Alt doesnt work when I want to use it for my language extra letters. I must log out and log in again to make it work.
I have read that in jaunty keyboard is on hal not xorg. So I dont know is this the same bug and is this bug in hal or rather in gdm.

Hi, I have this issue on Karmic!
The Right Alt key just doesn't work at all, which annoys me a LOT because I have to type in French and German...

Concerns my laptop keyboard as well as my "external" keyboard.

I tried to change almost all settings in the Keyboard Preferences dialog to fix the issue, without any result.

I am willing to provide more info if needed!

In my case, it seems to be related to Bug #382473:
right-alt key not working after changing "keyboard layout change" key to "both alt keys together"

I still have no fix, but at least other preople are suffering with me ;-)

there are many bugs about a not working right alt key. and there are many bugs about a not working shortcut to change keyboard layout (left alt + right alt). as far as i can tell fixing the right alt key would also fix the keyboard layout problem.

could someone with more knowledge than me in the topic please look at these bugs and generously mark as duplicate.

in no particular order:

bug #76901 (marked as fixed, but obviously there is a regression)
bug #363363
bug #251443
bug #462249
bug #96434
bug #226676

This is a 8.04 bug where if you have autologin enabled, then your keyboard layout settings are not activated on logon.
This has been fixed in subsequent versions of Ubuntu Linux, however there has not been a fix for 8.04.

Therefore, if you have 8.04, you can either upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu, or configure statically your keyboard layout settings in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. See the Ubuntu Wiki on how to configure your keyboard layout settings in xorg.conf.
