Bug Description

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 Monday March 17 4:52pm

Okidata B4350 can not be installed because the GPL licensed PPD driver is not included in Ubuntu 8.04. There is a driver called 4300 but this driver is %100 incompatible with the B4350 as it does not offer the correct printer options and settings. The B4350 PPD driver is licenced under the GPL.

The driver can be found at these URL's

In the search forms look for mono printers and under mono printers look for B4350

A ppd for your printer is already available in the openprinting-ppds package, although the ppd you link to seems to be more recent. The main problem is that the package openprinting-ppds is not installed by default.
So I see 2 issues:
1. The openprinting-ppds package should be part of the desktop seed, this was the case in Gutsy (regression).
2. The newer ppd should be included in openprinting-ppds (wishlist).

In gutsy openprinting-ppds was in the default installation. Can someone put it back in?

Er, but it *is* part of desktop-common (which is inherited by desktop):

desktop-common: * openprinting-ppds # Most common drivers we want in desktop; less common are in o-p-extra

... and indeed you can still see it in ubuntu-desktop's dependencies. Is this really a bug in Hardy?

That's weird! Colin, you are right. The openprinting-ppds package is already a dependency of ubuntu-desktop.
UbuntuSucks, on a default desktop installation the packages openprinting-ppds and ubuntu-desktop should be installed. Are these installed on your system?

Pascal, where do you see the ppd for B4350 is included in openprinting-ppds? I see only the 4300 driver, which the submitter stated was incompatible.

Anyway, the problem certainly isn't openprinting-ppds being absent from ubuntu-desktop, which was the rationale given for milestoning this bug. Marking as invalid for ubuntu-meta.

This bug was fixed in the package foomatic-db - 20080904-0ubuntu1

---------------
foomatic-db (20080904-0ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
o Fixed generic PostScript driver to get working with the PDF workflow.
The driver got broken in the upstream release from August 21 and it
had already problems before (LP: #259318).
o Ricoh has fixed several problems reported by "cupstestppd" in their
       PPDs (Upstream bug #164).
o Changed recommended driver for the HP Color LaserJet 35xx/36xx from
"pxljr" to "hpijs". The former driver has problems with some colors
(LP: #228635) and duplex does not work, too.
o Added entries for Lexmark E120 and E120n (LP: #135489), the
Dell 3100cn (LP: #90718), and the Okidata B4350 (LP: #203358).
o Fixed typos in printer model names which made some listed PPDs
not accessible: HP LaserJet 4345 MFP, HP Color LaserJet 9500 MFP,
       Brother HL-2060, HP DesignJet 750, Apple 12 640ps, Ricoh Aficio 5206
       (Red Hat bug #459847).
o Changed recommended driver of Brother HL-2060 to "hpijs" (Upstream
bug #166, Red Hat bug #292021).
o Fixed PPDs for the "pbm2l7k" driver (Upstream bug #167).
o Added IEEE 1284 device ID for Lexmark E120n (Red Hat bug #201318).
  * debian/rules: Replace the wrong "*1284DeviceId" by "*1284DeviceID" in
    the PPDs (Upstream bug #164).
