Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I request an enhancement, maybe the Ubuntu devs can work on, since the Gnome devs haven't in 4+ years. Hopefully this will be easier with the new Xserver.

When using more than one monitor, I would like the ability to set a desktop-background per monitor. As it is now, I select a background and it effects all displays.

The upstream bug is filed at: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147808

Thanks!

+1 for this.

Dual monitors are going to be more common and it will keep coming up.

I switched from KDE and couldn't quite believe that there really wasn't an answer for Gnome, especially with the fantastic new multiple-desktop-manager :(

There is an epic thread on the forums with all sorts of hacky solutions but none that will work well for laptop users who plug/unplug a lot.

This is actually not fixed in upstream. What I thought I had asked for in the bug link above was not asked clearly enough, or something. The result of that bug is now that the same background, can display correctly on both screens regardless of size. However, this launchpad bug is reported (again by me) upstream-bug at: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=604301

This time I ask for a way to manage backgrounds on both screens independent of each other.

Excellent!

Does anyone have this backported for karmic in a PPA? Alternately, I'd be willing to give it a go myself with a little bit of mentoring.

Never mind. I just compared the dependencies. Not a great idea to have people replacing most of the guts of karmic's Gnome through a PPA, I'd expect.

I'm running Lucid and I *still* can't set monitor's wallpapers individually. Was this patch never implemented, or was it dropped in 2.30?

Upstream bug was not really what this bug is about. Updated that to point at the correct upstream bug. This particular bug is not fixed upstream OR in ubuntu.
