Bug Description

running latest ubuntu lucid on netbook Acer Aspire One A110L.

Clicking on Hibernate:
Screen darkens, hard disk activity, and after 45sec a screensaver comes up. Moving the mouse brings up a login screen. I login and am back on my desktop. Apparently it doesn't even try to hibernate.

Clicking on suspend:
Screen darkens, hard disk activity, hard disk actitvty is off after ~20sec. Then nothing. The netbook keeps running (fan is on, backlight of screen is still on), but does not respond to any key (including CTR-ALT-DEL) or mouse movement/click. No response to pressing the power button. Only solution is to press the power button long enough to switch the computer off.
After rebooting the networking is disabled, and I have to manually enable it.

At least the suspend did work before (like in Karmic, not sure about earlier Lucids)

and this defaultkernel:
Linux aa1 2.6.32-19-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 31 17:46:20 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

With some playing through various applications the mainline kernel seem to behave identical to the default kernel, including the failure on suspend hibernate.

The only difference to the initital description is that after hibernate no screensaver came up, but the computer just froze. In both suspend and hibernate only the big button helped to get out. networking was again disabled and had to be enabled manually.

My Acer Aspire One A110 isn't exactly a rare breed of a netbook; I am surprised there aren't more complaints. Lucid was a fresh install from alpha (alpha2 I believe) erasing all previous content on the SSD

Not in my case... I do not have any SD cards mounted, one USB port in use
for mouse, no other hardware attached...
Of course is not an AOA110, but HP 6715b, but having same problem... Filed a
new bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/560966
Sometimes I do hear a strange sound before hanging from speakers, so maybe
the problem is pulseaudio...?

SD card mounted? Hmm, I have a 16GB card in the left slot of the AOA110 (Where it disappears completely). I unmounted and pulled the card, and restarted with cold boot. No programs started. Kernel is the mainline one, described above.

It did the trick. Almost:

Suspend:
Click on Suspend, after some 25sec of hard disk activity the computer is off (no fan, no backlight). Power switch LED is blinking slowly. Wake-up not from mouse-move or mouse-click, but from keypress. After 5sec screen saver came up, screen was locked, but login worked. WLAN was automatically reestablished.

Hibernate:
Click on Hibernate, some brief harddisk activity, then some 45sec later a terminal-message ("[ 337.752246] Freezing of tasks failed after 20.01 seconds (1 task refusing to freeze):" (nothing more) The the screen saver comes up and after login desktop is back. including WLAN.
Reclicking again on Hibernate, and some 20sec later the same terminal-message, yet some 10sec later computer is completely off. Restarting with power button, and computer went into locked screen saver, allowing login. So it was indeed hibernating.

So how can I find out which task prevents freezing, and how can this all be done with the sd-card inserted?

Afaik the 2.6.32-20.29 kernel mentioned by Andreas will not make the problem go away by itself. It will enable you to work around the problem by telling the system to assume that the SD card will remain in the slot while it is suspended. To tell the system this a parameter named removable has been added. Set this parameter to N.
You can see what this parameter is set to at the moment with:
cat /sys/module/mmc_core/parameters/removable

For details on how to set the parameter see my comment #11 in bug 477106 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/477106/comments/11).

Suspend:
1st try: worked (same as under described under #40)
2nd try: FAILED: after some 40 sec the screensaver came up, screen was locked. After login WLAN was present and all seemed ok
3rd try: worked. (as 1st try)
4th try: FAILED (like 2nd try) I have made absolutely sue that the netbook was not touched or moved!
5th try: FAILED (like 4th)

continuing with Hibernate:
6th try: after about 3min(!) the computer was off. Restarting (by power button) resulted in a cold boot, not waking up from hibernate! (Here may be an additional problem: it booted into my first kernel in grub, which is the mainline kernel 2.6.34-999, not the one I had booted for this session. Should the bootup not see a hibernate image of some sort and use that?) Networking was disabled.

I changed the boot order and made the 2.6.32-20 the default, and cold booted.
Suspend:
1st try: FAILED. after 50sec the screensaver came up
2nd try: worked. after 25sec it went into suspend. wake-up ok with network and wlan
3rd try: FAILED. after 40sec screensaver came up

continuing with Hibernate:
4th try: worked. took 3 min to hibernate, but recovery was a bit faster. Network and wlan present.
5th try: FAILED. after 45sec the screensaver came up, just like in the Suspend failures
6th try: Worked. like 4th try-

It is a bit erratic, I'd say.

ullix, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11.1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:

As well, please remove the tag:

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
