Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

Banshee refuses to connect to a DAAP share hosted by Firefly-1586SVN server. It says that it is unable to connect to music share. Other players, such as Rhythmbox have no problems connecting to the wanted share.

How do you try to connect? Is the share only not visible, or is it visible and an error occurs? What's the error saying?

I can confirm this bug with Firefly version svn-1696 and Banshee 1.7.0.

The share appears in the list and shows its name (the one i configured). So far it works. But when i click on the share, it says: "Unable to connect to music share".

I attached a log: I just opened Banshee, clicked on the share, looked at the error and closed Banshee.

Forgot to say: it works really fine with Rhythmbox 0.12.5.

I have this bug and also have I believe a work around. The work-around results from trying to investigate a Rhythmbox bug:

Rhythmbox Unable to Play Music from daap share that requires password
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/614294
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/119602

I was going to report the Banshee bug, but this bug already seems to cover it. My details are:

Clean install of Ubuntu 10.04.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.0

Two NAS boxes on network:

 1) NAS1 - Dlink DNS-323, firmware 1.08

 2) WD1 - Western Digitial MyBook World Edition - firmware 01.01.16 with MioNet 4.1.1.9

Both have built in daap (itunes) servers. Both of these servers and their music files can be seen and played under Windows Vista and Windows 7 using either itunes or songbird (with the daap plugin). The NAS1 daap server is setup so that it requires a password to access the server. Both itunes and songbird prompt for this password. WD1 does not require a password.

I installed the Banshee music player. Initially this could not see either NAS1 or WD1.

After a google search I edited the file: /etc/samba/smb.conf

and adding in the [global] section after the line "server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)"

  client ntlmv2 auth = no

Now Banshee was able see and connect to both WD1 and the DNS-323 daap server, it prompted for the password when connecting to NAS1. I was able to play music from both WD1 and NAS1.

As Banshee is not a core Ubuntu package I have also reported this issue and the workaround at Bugzilla under:

Bugs #423802, #450916 and #569205 are not duplicates to this one.The other bugs are about detecting a server, while this one is a about refusing to connect to that server. The workaround (editing smb.conf) does not help either. Please unduplicate. Most likely they are duplicates to each other, though.

I ran the Ubuntu update manager today, quite a few updates, including apparently various samba related packages. This has resulted in some change in behaviour of this issue.

If I now comment out in the file /etc/samba/smb.conf the line:
  client ntlmv2 auth = no

Banshee can now see the NAS box:
  NAS1 - Dlink DNS-323, firmware 1.08
(The other box is currently not available to try)
but it cannot play any music files from the NAS box.
Before it could not see the NAS box and hence of course not play any files.

However, if I now re-instate the line:
    client ntlmv2 auth = no
it can now play files from the NAS box.

I can confirm that with a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 (and updates as of 10th Nov 2010) that Banshee connects to the daap share with the default samba settings, a great improvement on 10.04.

Note that Rhythmbox is still unable to connect to the daap share in Ubuntu 10.10:

I have this same problem connecting to a ReadyNAS Ultra which is running firefly svn-1696.

I can see the server, but it says "Unable to connect".

If I try to connect by IP (Media > Add Remote DAAP Server), Banshee just spins.

The bug is still present in Natty: it's impossible to connect to any DAAP share (I tried with Rhythmbox shares and Tangerine shares).

I am also confirming that this bug still exists in Natty Narwhal (11.04) and Banshee

The same fix is required to correct the problem. Why was this expired? It is not fixed!

Same with Ubuntu 11.10 and Banshee. Running a share with forked-daap over LAN, no authentication required. Rhythmbox connects just fine. Banshee sees the share but only gives the "Unable to connect to music share" message. Same experience on both the current release Banshee version and Banshee 2.3.2 (just upgraded from ppa to get album Artist support, crossed my fingers it would solve this too.. no dice)
