The error appears when selecting the suits (Audio test, disk test,...) of the System Testing Utility.
Then it stays (comes again and again) the whole session.

I think this page speaks to the issue:
http://<email address hidden>
It seems that enabling and disabling the "hotkey" functionality is no longer supported, and the functionality is always on. The new behavior is to log a warning if this attempted, I suppose so that other software authors might notice this and change their code. From the end user's perspective there doesn't appear to be a real problem, except that we regularly get scary messages telling us that there's a serious kernel problem.
I see a few different ways to address this:
1. The kernel developers could downgrade the kind of warning emitted so that it is still logged, but does not trigger this tool.
2. All the software in Ubuntu that still enables or disables "hotkeys" could be hunted down and changed to quit doing this.
3. The tool that monitors kernel errors could be adjusted so that it quits flagging this as a critical issue.
Option 2 does not seem practical as a fix before Karmic is released, but "1" or "3" might be able to be accomplished soon. I'll bring this bug report to the attention of the kernel developers who made the patch which triggered the issue.

Mark Stosberg (markstos) wrote : | #18 |
I filed a related bug with Checkbox (the testing application) so that it can be modified to quit triggering the kernel oops on the affected laptops:
Mark Stosberg (markstos) wrote : | #19 |
Finally, I found a related bug for the "kerneloops" project:
https:/
I consider this the most important place to address the issue. The kerneloops utility is taking a harmless warning and reporting it to the user as a "serious error" that may cause system instability or a restart.
That problem could affect any number of cases like this one.
Mark Stosberg (markstos) wrote : | #20 |
Here's a workaround to make alerts stop. (It does not stop related event from happening, it just stops you from being notified about it. )
Open this file for editing:
sudo gedit /etc/kerneloops
You can comment it out as follows. This will prevent you being alerted to *any* kernel oops event:
# allow-submit = ask
Another alternative seems to be to leave the line active, but change the value from "ask" to "yes". I presume that in this case it is e-mailing all the kernel "oops" reports back to the kerneloops website, but without alerting you about them. I confirmed that it also stops the alerts, but I can't confirm if it still sends the emails.
Either way, you'll have to restart the "kerneloops" service after you make the change. (Rebooting would do the trick, too)
sudo /etc/init.

Each time I try to open the System monitor, it opens up with a corrupted display and a NEW icon appears saying I had a crash, and would I like to generate a report. I just finished updating to 9.10 and all was well previously.
apinunt (apinunt) wrote : | #24 |
I'm simply trying to display the System Monitor and encounter this crash every time. This time I was attempting to change the screen resolution to see if that would have any effect, which it didn't, and ended up being unable to return to 1024x768 after changing to 640x480. I could no longer get to the APPLY button to click on it. I eventually found that I could chagne the resolution from the command line using "xrandr -s 1280x768".
I have 3 more systems to upgrade, but am on hold until I see if this problem can be resolved, I can't live with frequent crashes.
apinunt (apinunt) wrote : | #25 |
Maybe the System Monitor is unrelated as I notice another crash occurred while reading some questions and answers on launchpad.net, so I now have 2 problems?

This problem did happen after the upgrade from the vesion 9.04 to 9.10.
I had (1 hour ago) a problem with my sound. I've just checked it and now the system don't crash more.
Thanks.
Umberto (2bebslu02) wrote : | #29 |
This has been happening to me, also. I reinstalled, figuring I must have messed something up when I was tinkering, and it happened again with the fresh install (after opening the "testing" application). Much thanks to everyone explaining what this problem really is and to Mark for showing how to disable the annoying and unnecessary alert.
Steve Beattie (sbeattie) wrote : | #30 |
As I commented in bug 346303, a kerneloops update was issued last night (see bug 471137) that effectively neuters kerneloops by default for karmic, so you should stop seeing these warnings once you apply the update. (It can be re-enabled by editing /etc/default/
What's happening here is that kerneloops is monitoring the kernel log looking for output that looks like a kernel oops (hence the name) or was generated by a BUG_ON() or WARN_ON() call. In this case, it's a false positive in that the reported message starts with "Warning" which is what kerneloops triggers on to look for an invocation of WARN_ON(). The thinkpad_acpi kernel code that emits it should either be fixed to do a proper WARN_ON() if it's warranted or the string should be changed to "Alert" or something similar.
