Place it in your /usr/bin/ folder. Then, in a terminal, use :

sudo backlight [1-15]

(1 is low, 15 is maximum)

Also, you wrote : "Booting from CD is done in BIOS mode. There seems to be a way to set BIOS mode". I tried to launch ubuntu (lastest 64bit), but still black screen. How to set bios mode ? Maybe my Imac27 is affected by a bigger bug ...
