Wow, surprisingly hard to get this patch upstreamed. :-/

Well, I'm not prepared to upgrade to the git xserver at this point since I'm mostly focusing on stabilizing the Ubuntu xserver currently. But hopefully you got the gist of what I'm proposing, I think it would be helpful for you to get better bug reports from people with this class of issue in the future. I think what I've got in Ubuntu should be sufficient for immediate debugging purposes.
