Thanks. Found a fix, figured I'd report back here and hopefully address the problems people are googling to get to this page. I'd removed the "quiet splash" from the kernel parms in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Unable to find easy way to remove Plymouth completely I readded those parms via grub. System booted and graphic splash screen reported that three drives were missing, each requiring S to skip or M to fix manually. That was apparently the problem holding everything up: Missing drives from /etc/fstab and removed kernel parms (in attempt to turn off graphic splash), so plymouth couldn't get required keyboard input (S or M). I'd suggest a timeout period before auto-choice of "S" and also an easy way to ditch plymouth and other unwanted additions. Three days and several hundred bucks later. HIH
