At the moment developers have chosen to go with gmrun since it is a simple application to run executable files. It will be basically like the run dialog from gnome-panel, but a stand-alone alternative.
While your suggestion is appreciated, for now, at least, I think it is best to make a decision and stick with it. I for one, am in favor of continuing on the gmrun path.
