Sounds like an implicit dependency on NetworkManager?
This is on Jaunty using ubuntuone-ppa-beta updated today Oct24-2009.
NetworkManager ran ok and I liked its variety of wireless and wired config options, but on my Intel integrated chipset, NetworkManager wouldn't hold onto wireless connections well enough...kept dropping them randomly. I find Wicd holds onto the assigned connection and doesn't suddenly drop it.
I too get the same error as L3x and I use wicd:
