I'm trying to bring up 10.04 behind a corporate proxy and it appears that Ubuntu One is connecting to the proxy - but thinks it's the Ubuntu One web server instead of a proxy!
It is very common for corporate networks to block outbound Web and force their users through proxies. Ubuntu won't be usable within those environments with such a fault

i.e. a sniffer shows that instead of seeing
CONNECT https:/ /launchpad. whatever
I see
random stuff that looks like SSL to me
...followed by a SSL error popup under Ubuntu
