I have the same, or a similar issue. After talking a bit with Rodney and Philip in IRC, they trimmed down to the following in my ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/oauth-login.log

 2009-07-14 16:08:09,771:771.941900253 UbuntuOne.OAuthDesktop.auth There was some unknown login error '(60, 'server certificate verification failed. CAfile: /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt')'

I never got to Step 4 in the install tutorial (as in Bug #369038), and I have the followin certs included in /etc/ssl/certs:

Go_Daddy_Class_2_CA.pem -> /usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla/Go_Daddy_Class_2_CA.crt
UbuntuOne-Go_Daddy_CA.pem
UbuntuOne-Go_Daddy_Class_2_CA.pem
