You are presumably getting this error because some part of your
configuration is pointing to the wrong location for firefox. Perhaps you
once installed firefox 3.0b3 to that location, and changed some
configuration to point at that executable, and then later it was
removed, but the configuration was not changed. You can test this by
simply running xdg-open from your terminal. Under GNOME, this in turn
calls gnome-open, which reads the gconf settings, and MIME db, to run
the correct application for the argument specified to xdg-open.
