I guess I should update this with my latest findings!

We have multiple access points with the same ssids on each, eduroam (WPA/WPA2 Enterprise) and eduroam-web (unsecured) and generally the same channel numbers.

I can always connect to eduroam-web with network-manager in both Intrepid (installed, and using the ppa nm3 version above) and Hardy (booted off a Xubuntu Live CD). I can sometimes connect to eduroam with network-manager if I am near a single access point.

There are places (say 35% strength) where I can connect with wpa_supplicant that don't work with network-manager.

Where there are two fairly nearby access points (say 60% strength) neither wpa_supplicant or network-manager seem to work in either version of Ubuntu.

I'm suspecting there may be more than one issue, with the Broadcom b43 driver maybe not handling the multiple access points well (as in bug 111502?) and network-manager not doing so well generally in marginal reception.

I'll give the ppa nm4 build a go tomorrow and hopefully upload some logs. I may also be able to beg/borrow another wireless card for comparison.
