Harvey Muller's solution worked for me as well. For the first time in months I actually saw usplash on boot!
Seems weird because I tried these exact same steps not too long ago and it didn't work. Perhaps in combination with driver updates? I did just upgrade to the latest nvidia drivers (171.05) last week, and have noticed a much more stable environment because of it. This could have had an effect on usplash.
