There is an improvement with the 20090321 daily-live cdrom. It boots into a lowres black X screen with the message:

Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.
Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings
could not be detected correctly. You will need to
configure these yourself.

I will investigate this further.
