Thanks Mario for putting together the patch. This approach seems appropriate to me in the sense that it errs on the side of caution. As for the regression potential, having a functional VESA on some cards which could work with nv does not seem to be a major problem to me, since realistically you have to install the proprietary driver (or nouveau) to do anything sensible anyway. So +1 from me.
Could you please put this into a PPA and ask for some more widespread testing on ubuntu-devel@? Feedback should be put into this bug preferably (to -devel@ will also do).
