I am using an up-to-date Hardy. How am I supposed to make this work?

I have it all plugged in, but gnome-display-properties has absolutely nothing useful (it only has the main display, with settings for resolution, hertz and rotation).

Can someone please step me through some commands or point to a webpage that describes the process?
