I have suffered from this same issue with my IBM R51 Laptop. The solution I am going with for now is to remove "Compiz" completely. I would rather have a functioning machine over one with fancy graphics, but doesn't boot. So far so good:

Command I used to remove Compiz:
"sudo apt-get remove --purge compiz*"
